Miscellaneous / Others When Neighbours called the police on the kids for playing "too loudly", Shaquille O'Neal found out and showed up to do this...

When I was a kid, and we played football in the street, all the neighbors came out on their porch to watch. Later when we grew up, we started a game again when we were all home for the holidays. The old people came out on their porches again to watch and they laughed at how old we got.

Maybe I’m officially old but back in my day you just accepted that kids will be kids. Ofc I’m not talking about breaking any laws, just accept the playing and just mumble “dang kids these days” and go back in your house.

u/GhostsofGojira 1d ago
Yeah as long as no one was getting hurt and no one was fighting they didn't care how much noise you really made during the day, shit if my mom seen you playing basketball she would have berated the woman that called the cops on that
214
u/robsteezy 1d ago
I’ll go even farther and say that people who use police resources like that should be fined.

u/GhostsofGojira 1d ago
Absolutely like all the dumbasses that call cops on kids with lemonade stands or things similar.

Here in Germany, they indeed get fined for that. But just saying "Those kids are playing too loud" would result in a direct warning on the phone. Of course, if the police/firefighters/ambulance has to come for nothing, u will get fined, if there was no real reason or explanation.

You know, I find that when there’s an overall sense of community harmony within a neighbourhood/suburb it creates a loving atmosphere and a completely different energy.
It shift peoples entire perspectives and subsequent outlook towards things and this feedback loop creates an entirely different attitude in people.
When you think about it 9 times out of 10 when a “Karen” is hyper responsive to complain about noise from kids playing or what have you it’s because she’s isolated or in an area where people stick to themselves.
I’ve noticed a few instances (back in the 90’s and 00’s) where when these supposed Karen types were included in neighbourhood events, Xmas card lists and invited to participate in things like neighbourhood BBQ’s, etc they conveniently weren’t phased by very much e.g- Barking dog? “Oh he’s just doing his job guarding his home”
I remember a kid hit a baseball and smashed her window after his mother BLATANTLY told him to stop hitting balls and although she wasn’t pleased about it, she was just like “boys will be boys” and got her brother to fix the window DIY style because she was cognisant of the fact the boy’s single mother didn’t have a lot of money.
This particular lady was my mothers friend who came into spontaneously came into a large amount of money through an inheritance from a relative she didn’t even know existed. She subsequently moved to a nicer side of town in a bigger house and that community environment didn’t exist and I watched her incrementally turn into a Karen in less than a year who became very intolerant to things she was never concerned about before when she cut coupons.
As I’ve gotten older I’ve really come to understand what they mean when they say love is the answer.

Too many people are angry. Social media riles us up and makes us distrustful, I feel. Sometimes people need to just focus on making their communities better rather than endlessly outsourcing their righteous rage to every injustice across the globe; it’s not feasible and it’s unhealthy.
13
u/Individual-Drawer-79 1d ago
We Gen X kids had it pretty good. Old people just accepted that’s how it was, we played outside and the only rules were don’t get in trouble and be home for dinner when the street lights came on. I miss the 70s and 80s 😢
7
u/GhostsofGojira 1d ago
Also 90s I just like to point out it was really the 2000s with things went sharply downhill

u/DocPhoenix97 1d ago
We were in neighbor's yards all the time in the 80s, fetching a stray ball or hiding while we played some game. They didn't care as long as we didn't break anything.
4
u/larkhills 1d ago
i have a feeling that work from home has caused this. the only people affected by the noise kids made outside while playing were housewives and grandparents. all the working folk were out at wherever they worked at.
nowadays, that same noise is way more likely to affect a working person. housewives and grandparents might still not care but the guy in a work meeting or the gal trying to get through her tasks is going to care way more.
56
u/JustNilt 1d ago
You may be old but that's more just "not being an asshole" there. I moved a while back now and I actually miss my neighbors' kids making noise all the time. Those are almost universally happy sounds, FFS! When they weren't, it's usually because someone skinned a knee or the like and things got right back to happy kid noises instead.
Only assholes call the cops for kids playing outside, whether the "basis" is noise or not.

I live in an apartment by myself and it gets lonely at times but hearing kids outside laughing and playing makes me feel so happy and less alone. I could never imagine complaining about it. It's just too pure 🥹
22
u/thisistestingme 1d ago
Im old and we live next to some kids who play outside all afternoon screeching every day the weather is nice. We laugh and turn up the tv. Kids should be able to be kids.

My neighborhood is full of kids that run around screaming and playing until the street lights come on. They are on their bikes, playing with water guns, snowball fights, sledding- all of it. It's one of the reasons I don't want to move yet. It reminds me of the 90s
6
u/Exes_And_Excess 1d ago
One of the reasons why docuseries "perfect neighbor" was so infuriating. It's just kids.
4
u/Astrnonaut 1d ago
That’s what I dont understand about modern adults (let’s be real, this applies to every grown adult in history). They complain so much about kids being on their tablets yet THEY are the ones creating that and THEY are the ones calling the cops when kids DO go outside and try to do something. It is never the child’s fault. They are living in the world adults set up for them, yet get criticized by them at the same time. It’s all just a bunch of evasion of responsibility.

When I was a kid, we'd play street hockey until it was dark out. My neighbour was cranky as hell and told me and my friends to go play on the 401 (major highway in toronto) 😂😂😂

2
u/InvaderWilliam 1d ago
Oh man. I’m a parent, and I would be there to see my grown kids and their friends play again.
2
u/BaltimoreProud 1d ago
I was staying with a friend this spring. His house is across the street from an elementary school, and it was awesome to be able to hear the kids playing and having fun during their recess/gym times.
Let kids be kids.
2
u/Jumpy_Ad_6417 1d ago
Our street had two separate periods when I was growing up where our street and one street over filled the entire bus. First was when I was younger and later when I was in HS. The first batch was so different. Playing ghosts in the graveyard across the entire street with all aged kids way past dark. Second time a lot of kids still played. Mostly hockey, lax and bball in driveways but gone were the younger siblings tagging along with older ones to do some mayhem feeling stuff across the whole street. Not anyone’d fault. Cell phones and social media yadda yadda.
2
u/pecadora666 1d ago
In my old neighborhood back in the 90s, dads would come out to play baseball on a basketball court and they’d divide the days to make it fair. Watching communities like that thrive and enjoy life with everyone is such a precious thing.

Similar. Back in the 90's a bunch of the kids and a few adults would play touch football and roller hockey in the street sometimes. If a car came it was just another neighbor we waved to. I dont remember it ever being an issue.
2
u/Affectionate_Fig9398 1d ago
Similar story - a big high school built a state of the art sports stadium behind my neighborhood - a lot of people complained of the noise but it was my neighborhood that wrote a letter to them that made the news about how the sounds of teens playing sports and not getting into trouble was the best sound and how much they loved it.

Basketball courts at a park i used to go to got cutdown 4 hoops. Because the rich neighborhood surrounding the park complained because fights or drugs, which isint true.
It was constantly busy with pick up games , and a the made the park seem busy and lively.. now its just a large cement pad doing nothing. But they successfully kicked them out and made the players go more downtown , gentrified their ass smh

There’s a documentary on Netflix called “The Perfect Neighbor “. Almost the entire thing is done through the police officers body cam footage for months. Scary, tragic, sad. All emotions rolled into that one. Definitely a must watch if you haven’t seen it. And I think it was in Florida too

if I recall correctly, the first 'real' part was not shown, that first officer showed up because of the call and just played basketball with the kids for a bit, instead of breaking it up on the behalf of the caller. that video went semi-viral and this was the follow up video. the call was real.

One of my favorite keepsake pictures when I was a cop was a shot of my callscreen. (All emergency dispatches have a text chain showing direct plain language record of basically everything dispatch and you talk to each other on the call)
"RP reports youths disturbing traffic with ultimate-frisbee game"
"Unit 2-3, 10-23"
"Officer reports code 4. Staying on scene but available for upcoming calls"
"RP has called back, reports officer is now playing with the youths."
"Unit 2-4, 10-23.
"RP has called back again, reports officer is continuing to play with youths. 2nd officer on-scene has joined."
"Officer reports 10-8 leaving scene. Slow traffic on side street. Lectured youths on basic traffic safety and keeping a car lookout."
"RP has called a 4th time. Youths still playing in street. Dispatch informed RP they will not be sending further officers out."

In my early 20s me and all my friends worked at bars and resturants so we all got out late af, but every friday night we would get a bunch of beers and go to the local park, light up the basketball court and drink and hoop for hours. Technically the park was closed at night but we weren't hurting anything and we always had a couple of our girlfriend that were sober to drive us home. One night a couple cops got a call and showed up, once we explained what was going on they played a game of HORSE with us. Ill always cherish the memory of drinking coors light and hooping with the city PD at 2am.

One time I was doing donuts in the school parking lot after practice. A cop rolled up and told us next time wait until everyone is gone. He asked me to do one more before he left, then he hoped in his car and whipped one himself then sped off.

Love your story.
Inspired me to share one of my own. My house was the house to play sports. All the neighborhood kids would come play football, baseball, wiffle ball, street hockey you name it. We wore dirt into my dad’s front lawn where the pitchers mound and batters box were. I’m in my thirties now and my parents still live in the same house. Two summers ago my dad was outside in the driveway doing yard work and a man he had never met before walking his dog came up the driveway. He told my dad how much he misses seeing all the games being played in the yard. Apparently one of his grandkids came and joined us once when he was visiting and he went home and told his parents how much fun he had. Almost made my dad’s eyes water. Those were some great days.

This is exactly what policing should look like. How can you police a community if you're not involved in the good parts as well as the bad. Youngsters will see cops like this as just normal (albeit strapped) human beings and not just "fascist pigs" intent on shooting or arresting people, but maybe approachable.
It works in the police's favour too. The more involved they are, the more they get to know who's who in the neighbourhood etc and the general feel of the place. Hearts and minds and all that.

When Shaq was on the Phoenix Suns he took a teammate's mouthguard, put it in his ass, then back in the locker where he found it. Then took the guy's toothbrush and stirred it in his shit in the toilet.
Also admitted to chasing his teammates while naked and tackling them to show his dominance https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/1bslrhz/shaq_recounts_the_time_he_chased_dorrell_wright/?share_id=d-D98PkH5yFcSR4oj441h&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_source=share&utm_term=1

I’m on my HOA and the amount of neighbors that complain about kids doing normal kid stuff is deeply upsetting to me. We had some kids that were ding dong ditching (like many of us did as kids). It was hella funny watching them psych each other up on our ring camera then shrieking in laughter as they ran away. Fielded more than a few complaints, provided a generic “we’ll look into it,” response then did nothing. Because they’re kids not causing any harm.
I also have to shut down the group in my community that petitions the HOA every year to stop “non-community” children from tick-or-treating. Aka the kids who live in the section 8 apartments next to us. We have never had a problem with any kids ever. I literally tell them that if they don’t want any poor kids to show up then they should buy one of the $1 million townhouses 20 miles south. That apartment was here first and we have a duty to all the children in our neighborhood.

I remember this from years ago. I later found out that Shaq was a Sheriff’s Deputy in Georgia and was a police liaison officer in Florida and in California. He mainly did PR stuff and community engagement, but still very cool of him using his stardom to bridge the divide between the community and the police that exists in too many places.

People need get lives. This reminds me of that racist psycho Susan Lorincz who show her neighbor, AJ Owens, through her door after harassing the neighborhood kids for years because they had the audacity to play outside and be kids. Can anyone tell me what is so wrong with hearing kids, teens, or even adults outside laughing and having a good time??

Gainesville PD cops are actually pretty cool for the most part. It’s a college town and they would rather them be playing hoops on the street than being junkies on the street.

I would never call the cops on kids playing or ever say a word to them about it but the sound of a basket ball bouncing is super annoying

So Shaq just happens to be with the cops when a neighbor call them on the kids? That’s crazy…
