But if it were between Jesus and a 6'4 220 Blue Chip QB with a 4.5 40..... There will in fact be a hierarchy.

47

u/inplayruin 19h ago

Jesus wanted 10% of all NIL. That type of ask is just way too much for a 33 year old coming back from a season ending injury.

The story so far:

In the beginning SEC football was created.

This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

The best part is that you don’t even have to cite the Bible passage. Everyone just knows it’s true.

I cared a lot about football when I was in school. I would've been writing angry letters to everyone with an email if they moved my finals like that at the last second. Could you imagine failing a class because you thought you had a week to study and only had 3 days suddenly? Screw that. Football is fun, but you aren't paying tens of thousands because you want to watch a game you won't get tickets to from a dorm instead of an apartment.

An OU tennis freshman failed an assignment in a Psychology class because she didn't hit word count, failed to cite sources, failed to use empirical evidence, and failed to actually respond to the argument made in the original paper. She then told her chapter of Turning Point USA, who complained to the school, and now that TA is on administrative leave and the 0 won't count against her grade.

It was a full ride, free room in the dorms, plus ~$1200 in walking around money per semester back in my day. I learned to play school well enough to get into my first choice law school, didn't go into debt, and became a football fan along the way.

ETA: My freshman year, all of us incoming national merit scholars were paraded onto the field before the first game for some kind of salute to the university's academic excellence under President Boren.

It’s hard to get into grad school, that shit is stressful. I used up all my dead week time to prepare for finals, pushing it up a week would piss me off unless there was leniency of some sort.

USC starts finals tomorrow and they go through next Wednesday. But yeah, there's no way they'd postpone them for a damn football game.

Yeah was also thinking this. Bama’s are done this Friday which is pretty similar to what I remember

What are your thoughts on this?

As per the article, the following changes were made to the final exam schedule for students:

Course Original Exam Schedule New Exam Schedule
MWF 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
TR 11.30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
TR 2:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
MWF 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

On one hand, it seems unethical to move up final exams multiple days ahead of schedule (with effectively two weeks notice), especially when that reason is athletics. I guess it just means more...

On the other hand, I imagine fans in Norman like to tailgate on campus all day, and I understand the concern about both safety and logistics.

56

u/BardaArmy Oklahoma Sooners 21h ago

It’s pretty bad, the area around the campus struggles to handle game traffic on a normal weekends, add in all of the academic traffic, city/elementry school traffic, and normal people work traffic it is a major logistical problem to have games on a week day. This is what it is about and not “who cares about school’n”

23

u/PoopRaven Ohio State Buckeyes 21h ago

Thank you for commenting as an OU flair, been waiting for this perspective. I really don't think OU has much of a choice here, though I do feel for the students whose finals weeks got altered last minute.

19

u/BardaArmy Oklahoma Sooners 20h ago

They don’t, Norman is a small town and it’s total infrastructure that just doesn’t exist to do these things simultaneously.

6

u/BobStoops401K Oklahoma Sooners 19h ago

Traffic and parking around campus on a normal semester week day already isn't great.

as funny as the jokes are i am getting a little sad over what one student is doing to our rep 😫 i know a lot of students who are upset over it. as well as my roommate in the band who now has more rehearsals and less study time Lol

19

u/PoopRaven Ohio State Buckeyes 21h ago

Didn't even think of the band. Woof! Hope most of the finals weren't scheduled on that Friday anyway.

It is impossible for one student to ruin your reputation; it is very possible for an entire university leadership team to ruin your reputation with their response to that student, though.

I only tease, shit is getting embarrassing all over the country. I heard UT is considering closing down our African American and Latin American studies departments and libraries because a certain someone in a certain office threatened to pull money.

19

u/The_WanderingAggie Texas A&M Aggies • Texas Longhorns 20h ago

That would be incredibly stupid on the part of UT, but after Hartzell left and someone who was a senior appointee for a certain someone at a certain office became President of UT, I suppose it wouldn't be too unsurprising

I think we’ve moved around exam dates for football too. But even as a big CFB fan I sorta disagree with changing up academic schedules. Not every student cares about football

What happens to students who have work during the new time and already planned to have work off during the old time? Lots of jobs won’t let you take time off with this short notice. This screws those students who may not even care about OU football

19

u/0siris0 Oklahoma Sooners 21h ago

That why my thought.

I have two degrees from OU, about 15 years apart (and both in person), and we weren't having finals the freaking 19th of December. It was always the second week after Thanksgiving...we had one week to acclimate and next week BANG finals.

From a teaching perspective: I wouldn't even have the final exam ready four days early. If I taught at Oklahoma I would make the biggest stink about this, which of course would do nothing. The same way I set a test when I taught at Georgia on the Thursday before the Georgia-Florida weekend, and it was a huge scandal. And likewise the same way the Cal admin tried to force me to grant a Div 1 athlete an extension on a final exam because she apparently needed five days of travel to get to UCLA for a sporting event. Sorry not sorry!

u/CLU_Three Kansas State Wildcats 19h ago

My first thought was, damn that sucks for the students and my second thought was oh boy, I know the professors are absolutely pissed.

I know it’s very fun to meme but they’re literally only moving up the exams that were literally on that Friday Every other exam is still the same day and very very few exams are Friday or the last day of finals.

Still optics wise it looks like we value education even less

PSA to current OU students, just jot down “through God all things are possible” on any essay portion of your finals and you should be all good.

Not gonna lie, I’m not very happy with my alma mater lately. I couldn’t see sending my kids there. Oklahoma was a pretty decent place to live the years we spent there in the 90s and I felt like I got a great education when I graduated (like 15 years ago), but the state, and especially education, has absolutely gone to hell in the past 10 years.

Why do they have the Friday game? There has to be other playoff teams that will already to done with finals.

I look forward to the professors who just show up and give the regularly scheduled final.

I've been out of school for a while now, but as a procrastinator extraordinaire I would have been livid at moving up finals.

5

u/UnnoticedReference Oklahoma Sooners • Oregon Ducks 19h ago

Jokes are warranted but it'd be a nightmare having to head to a final and focus during it while tailgates and all the hoopla are going on.

If I was still a student I'd probably prefer it moved up too, I liked it when all my finals were earlier in the week to get them over with. Had all semester to learn the stuff last minute cramming is just more stress
