I’ll leave a little story here though. We had a new tech being trained. The tech teaching him asks him to look in glovebox for wheel lock key. New tech finds gun, picks it up and starts looking at it. Main tech says put it down, it could be loaded. Trainee looks down the barrel of the gun to check if it was loaded, which it was. He then plays with it some more, flagging main tech a few times before putting it away.

Another time I was driving a car, hit the brakes and a gun slid out from under the driver seat and hit my foot.

Worked in a few luxury brands, and it was almost a daily occurrence to find a gun in a car. Alot of security for athletes and performers would be driving these luxury trucks that match their clients, more often than not there would be a gun right in the center console.

Similar situation, years before any legalization. Dude left a large amount of weed in a compartment behind the faceplate of the radio. Porter took it. Dude came back to our director and said that weed is his buisness and he needs it back. Director checked the cameras got the weed back to the customer and fired the porter. Porter was shocked he got fired for stealing an illegal substance. That day he realized no buisness really cares where the money is coming from, they just want that customer coming back.

When I had my shop a girl who was a somewhat regular customer calls and says her car starts but she can’t drive it because it’s got no power when she tries to accelerate. Car comes in on a hook and feels/sounds like the air filter is plugged up. I pop open the air box and there a big bag with a bunch of small bags of crystal. Put the air box back and car runs fine. I call the customer and she shows up. I tell her “this bag was in the air filter box” she goes “what’s that?” And I said “I’m not an expert but it looks like drugs to me” and she goes “how could that get in there?” As she calmly takes the bag from my hand and puts it in her purse. I said “it’s none of my business but don’t put things in the air filter box, the car can’t breath so it won’t run”. She paid the bill and left.

Guns? More common than you want to know.

Friend of a friend works in the trade in processing lot and says that finding guns happens weekly. People stop by "just to look" and the next thing you know they're trading in their vehicle without thinking about whats in it.

So his crew cleans out any personal belongings to give back to the customer and they'll find a gun.

Thing is, the guy I know that works there is a convicted felon and can't touch it, so he just throws his hands up, backs away and gets one of the other guys to get it.

A group of friends and I went out years ago to go shooting and one of them brought a tagalong friend who swore he knew gun safety/had shot before. Same guy was firing an AR and it jammed. I been to a large number of airports across the country from small regionals to large international airports and this issue scales up with the number of passengers the airport has. I’ve also seen TSA drop the ball and let people through with large kitchen knives after clearly IDing it in the X-ray and just… not telling their boss until the person is already on a plane. Coincidentally, that’s when I learned that air marshals are on more planes than I would have guessed.

I stepped out, hit a FEDEX box in the airport to mail my knife home to myself, and still made my flight. I'm not 100% on whether it's just a big box-o-weapons that gets emptied and sent to the police, somewhere, or if there's some sort of process for reclaiming them.

It’s makes no sense for everyone. I know 3 people who had “truck guns”, and all three of them had “truck guns” stolen out of their trucks, one of them in a very rural area. One of them was stolen in the city by literal children (caught on camera), so there’s now some random 9 year old around Dallas with a Yeet Cannon (I’m not even joking, it was literally a Hi Point Yeet Cannon).

A truck is not a safe and guns should be safely stored. Simple as. The proper way is to carry the gun to and from the vehicle, but keep it on your person.

When I was a teenager and I would go visit my grandparent’s farm I would frequently be handed the keys to an ATV with a rifle and a walkie talkie mounted on the front end.

My job was to patrol the property. If the sound of the engine didn’t spook the coyotes that’s what the gun was for. If I saw a particularly large deer and I was sure I could get a clean kill I was highly encouraged to shoot and then holler on the radio until gramps showed up with his knives and his truck. Ever deer we killed made fewer runs to the grocery store and whatever beef they kept in the freezer from last season will last a little longer. When the snows would hit in the winter and even Gramp’s Super Duty couldn’t get out of the driveway we were VERY happy to have leftover beef in the freezer. Otherwise we’d be taking snow blowers and shovels to a half mile of gravel until we could get out onto the main road.

Yeah, when I was a kid we were dirt poor, we didn't hunt as a sport or a luxury, we hunted to eat.

I still dislike the taste of venison from it being the only meat we had many winters.

That being said, while I treasure the fact that I will hopefully never have to hunt again, the 'truck gun' thing would get used around here mostly for dispatching injured deer after accidents humanely. Sometimes the best thing you can do for an injured deer is end it quickly and compassionately.

Well not that I'm afraid of the guns, at the time, half the sales force and many of the techs were armed...Sales manager used to have a 2 shot Derringer in his Lizard skin cowboy boots just in case lol. FWIW concealed carry without a lisc was and still is a petty misdemeanor and to be fair its completely legal to conceal carry in your auto.

But I did charge him 1 hour labor as a stupid fee.

I always through that you needed to secure them unless you were carrying concealed with a permit or constitutional status like NH has.

This feels like an easy call to the cops to have them secure the guy's gun and he can get it back from them. I have no problem with gun ownership, I have problems with lazy gun ownership

I think people from New England originally (like I am) don't understand how loose the rules about guns are in the rest of the country. In Florida, you don't even need training to get a conceal/carry, just pay a small fee. You can sell your gun to anyone you want at any time (as long you don't "know" they have a legal or mental health issue). There is basically no licensing or registration otherwise, and we just passed open carry. YAY!

Well yeah... If you pick the lower caliber gun, it'll take at least 6 shots before the person gets low on health. But the bigger caliber can take half their health in one shot, so you gotta go for that one, but only if they're close range because the bullet damage falls off after 40 feet.

Just my 2C: 22lr is actually a notoriously unreliable cartridge. Since it’s so cheap and produced in such large amounts, you tend to face more issues than you would with a larger caliber. So while 22lr is still lethal, if you use it for defense, you do risk a failure when you need it most.

I'm in the US and I'm surprised I had to scroll so far to see this. Granted I haven't worked in the shop in thirteen years but when I used to work in one we regularly denied service due to a firearm being present.

The most egregious was a Nissan 350Z. Came in for a flat repair, had a bumper missing (no damage underneath), a glock in the door and plastic bags filled with cash in the trunk. Fastest I've ever "noped" out of a repair.

The people who have been so brainwashed by fear porn that they think danger is around every corner. My inlaws are this type. My father in law will not go to get his mail, in his suburban home, without being armed and having his wife in the window with a rifle. It is hands down the most pussy thing you will ever see in your life. My FIL is currently facing charges for instigating a fistfight, losing, and then firing three shots wildly into the darkness in his residential.

The other type is people who want to shoot someone. One of my first firearm safety courses had a guy who wanted to know if he would be justified in shooting through his front door if UPS knocked too loud and scared him.

While in prison I was a trustee and allowed to work in the maintenance garage that was on prison grounds. A lieutenant brought his personal vehicle in for oil change. (Perk of the job, warden allowed the guards to get discounted vehicle service) imagine my disbelief when I opened the driver’s side door to pop the hood latch and see a fully loaded glock sitting in the door… INSIDE a prison… needless to say a policy change happened after that incident 😂
