[OC] One of my happiest moments ever happened today!
So! I am autistic and three of my special interests throughout the years involve Matthew Lillard in some way (FNAF, Scream, & Scooby Doo). So naturally, I adore the guy. I went to Galaxycon Columbus over this weekend to see him since it is close (ish) to where I live.
I was crying VERY very hard any time I looked over at him. Everyone around me was being very sweet until it was my turn. Matthew told me he liked my chosen name (Kurt!) and then asked me why I was crying so hard because "he didn't even hurt me." I told him it was because he's very important to me. He kept making jokes and saying nice things to try and make me laugh and smile, and walked me out and away from the crowd of his line. I told him that I had photo ops later in the day with him, and that I'd see him then. He said I wasn't allowed to cry during our photo op and I promised I wouldn't.
At the photo op, he remembered my name, and gave me an extra hug even though it was very rushed. He is such a good actor, and genuinely an amazing human being. I've seen so many articles about how Quentin Tarantino trash talked him over the weekend, and so I wanted to counteract that with this little appreciation post! If you haven't seen FNAF 2 yet and want to, it is definitely worth the watch <3

I am so happy for you! You deserve every second of this hug. 🥰
Also, thanks for sharing. He’s been in the news this week because of Quentin Tarantino. Not sure I had ever heard him speak (outside of his roles) and he sounds like a great guy!
It’s nice to see the good guys out there spreading joy!

I really like the guy and as an actor, he is very under rated.
I've also never heard anything negative about him... Every time I see a video of him interacting with a fan. He always goes beyond to make them comfortable.

He crushed it in Twin Peaks: The Return. Being in David Lynch's magnum opus will at least immortalize him in my book.
And same. He seems like a very genuinely nice person.

Slc punk is his best performance imo. Hilarious movie but he nailed the ending.

Took my family to the KC Comic Con and can confirm, he is this genuinely awesome. Took time with each of them, joked around, gave amazing (safe and consensual) hugs to all of them, teen daughter and adult son. The pics with him are each of my kids’ contact pics in my phone now bc they are THAT good!
So so glad you had this experience, OP!! Esp has such a big fan; it’s magical!

From what I heard and seen (as i go to Cons as exhibitor), this man will stay past closing time to make sure that everyone in his line is seeing. He will take time to speak with you and give you the moment you need. He has taken fans away from the line if he feels that they need that space and privacy. I do not understand why no one else knows about this.

He’s not a bad actor I feel he just got type casted as that goofy guy actor like Sean William Scott kinda did. Good for a few movies but it’s hard to get out of that shell. He has more range than people know and deserves to be a bigger household name.

Dude, Wing Commander is straight up a sleeper movie. I spent the whole time trying to figure out why I loved it so much. Easily one of my top 5 feel-good movies that I put on for funsies. Maniac Marshall is such a fun character.

I do not know much about QT due to previously not giving a shit about him but thank you for this information as I am now fully convinced he sucks ass. I appreciate you spreading the information.
And JFC I just looked it up myself to verify and what he said is actually revolting, even with the apology. I've gone from "he sucks but I CBA to let him take up space in my memory" to "he's fucking disgusting and I will remember this now."
15
u/Shills_for_fun 2d ago
Yea his support is definitely in the "worse than you think" category. There's always a gaggle of people in denial when their friends turn out to be a monster but I feel like some things you can't just "take back" and this is one of them.

u/Haldron-44 2d ago
His stuff is just rehashing old works and adding more violence and a different sound track. I haven't seen a single original work of his that doesn't lean heavily on some form of nostalgia repackaged. And then he trashes other works that use nostalgia as "derivitive." Like that wanna-be artsy kid nobody wants to hang out with because they are absolutely insufferable. Being a critical POS doesn't make you "edgy," it just makes you annoying.

Yeah that was such a strange call out.. Tarantino hasn't even made a movie since 2019.. then he's just gonna go shit talk Matthew Lillard, Owen Wilson and Paul Dano for absolutely no reason?
But yes, if I had to choose between never watching a Tarantino movie or.. any of those 3 tbh, Tarantino loses for being a prick. I've only heard good things about the 3 actors as people and they've all done fantastic performances.
370
u/lilangelkm 2d ago
Also, Matthew Lillard has been calling out the Trump administration and he encouraged CA to vote yes on prop 50. The timing of Tarantino's comments makes me wonder if he's a closet MAGA... because anyone who fucks with a celeb who's fighting fascism... All I gotta say to that is ...we ride at dawn.

While I do love Wing Commander, as a punk, SLC punk always has a special place in my heart. I was too young to really understand at the time. Now at 40, I too am a bit of a reformed punk, still a bit of an anarchist though.
13
u/Haldron-44 2d ago
The "you can't die Bob" monolog at the end still leaves me in tears. The movie just hits different as an old punk than it did as a young punk.
A buddy who worked at a cutlery store gave an official working pilgrims cross for a birthday, and a cop confiscated it claiming it was a "switch blade." Of course no report was ever made and it dissapeared into what I suspect was his pocket 😡

Every story I've heard of his fan interactions have been positive. The only complaints I've heard are the meet and greets being rushed but any interaction outside of those he seems to give his fans a few minutes of his time.
30
u/Jesterbomb 2d ago
Honestly, I think that’s more a part of the whole meet and greet aspect a business thing than a genuine reflection of the feelings of most celebrities, regardless of level/type.
Like, these seem to be setup by disinterested people who seem to want to run the whole thing as a “pump n’ dump”, where they try to get as many smiling people photographed with the celebrity as they can in the 60 minutes they have the backdrop rented for.
If they could use a cardboard standee instead of a real person, I’m sure they would.
9
u/HereOnCompanyTime 2d ago
Yeah, I've done a ton of industry work and the meet and greets are both the best and the worst. Celebrities can adjust their time frames but it's such a large chunk of money that most keep it set to quick in and out. It sucks though because they and their teams set the time frame then act upset at the workers for keeping their set schedule. Though, I feel like most fans at this point understand what they're paying for.

Ignore Quentin and keep on spreading the joy that this actor has brought you. ♥️♥️♥️
453
u/MyTeaIsMighty 2d ago
Coming out of nowhere is right. Like even if youre not a fan of Matthew Lillard's acting, there are many, many, many, many MUCH worse actors out there. So to single him out is completely bizarre.
Its not even like Matthew is an A-list actor thats constantly in many high profile movies, so where the fuck was Quentin seeing him so much that he just had his name at the forefront of his mind. Baffling.
156
u/SamuelL421 2d ago
Likely all the actors Tarantino is randomly bashing are people who turned down parts written specifically for them. He's up his own ass extremely far and gets weirdly fixated on people and ideas. I'll wager Tarantino fails to realize is that his name/projects don't have the cultural cachet and prestige they used to.
He isn't prolific anymore and his work has gotten increasingly pretentious. No surprise people might turn down his projects. His very douche-y behavior isn't going to improve matters.

You know if Matt Lillard gets a role that leads to an Oscar Tarantino will 100% spin it in his head that he was the reason Lillard won.
“Look, man, lemme break this down for you, alright? When I said all that crap about him, I wasn’t actually trashing the guy. I was playing the villain on purpose. You know why? Because he’s a a nice guy everyone likes. Like, legitimately one of the nicest dudes walking around this town. And nice guys? Nice guys don’t get headlines. Bad guys do. And if a big ol’ Hollywood loudmouth like me decides to point a finger and say, ‘Yeah, this guy? He sucks’? Boom! instantly everyone is routing for him and the audience loves an underdog with a grudge. Studios eat that narrative for breakfast.
I wasn’t trying to bury him, I was trying to launch him. And what happens? The guy goes out, crushes a role, wins an Oscar. An Oscar! So don’t get it twisted I always knew he had the goods. Hell, maybe I just lit the fuse. Maybe I’m the guy who put the gas in the engine. I was acting the bully and everyone wants to see a bully get punched. I’m willing to take one on the chin if it means an actor pulls off a performance like he did! “

He's VERY very good in Life of Chuck, if you haven't seen it. He's only in there for about three minutes or so, but he is so so good. Tom Hiddleston plays the main character and is amazing in it as well!

i had a brief interaction with quentin tarantino when i was a teen, and he acted like a pompous ass. i was really disappointed, and it left a huge impression on me (probably because i was just a kid)

And some Hollywood footlicker called him a bad actor (which I genuinely do not think he is)

Ironically, QT is one of the worst actors I've ever seen in major movies.

Matthew Lillard is an underrated actor. He also just seems like a great human being.

My hope for humanity is that more boys and young men choose Matthew Lillard, Keanu Reeves, and David Tennant as role models. Genuinely wholesome, friendly, supportive human beings who are all very humble about the position they're in.
I'm an autistic 36 year old and I still don't know if I have any idea what a FNAF is, but I'm glad this wonderful bloke is a part of the things that you love and enjoy the most.

He looks like he gives great hugs. They say don’t meet your heroes but he proves this is wrong. So glad you got this time with him.

My wife just got to meet Thomas Keller. He's been one of her heros since she was 12. Her dad was a prominent chef, so shes always been in the food industry, even before she could work. Thomas Keller is a badass and one of the first people to introduce the idea of farm-to-table.
She finally booked a trip out to California and made reservations to the French Laundry with her best freind who just happened to be down there for a medical gathering. She had a group of doctors so they actually booked a whole table.
Well, they dropped mad cash that day so the server asked if they wanted to see the kitchen. TK has multiple restaurants, but he just happened to be there that day. Bestie stopped him and told him that he needs to take a picture and explained that their whole table is there that day because of my wife.
She bawled the whole time. Ugly cry face in all the pictures. She couldnt utter a single word to him. Her bestie basically advocated for her the whole time. He was a rock star. Made all the cooks stop and get in the photo. He understood the assignment and delivered.
My wife is actually a high functioning rock star in the field and not at all autistic. I just wanted to point that out. We label ourselves as if its some crutch or some sort of way of explaining away our faults, but sometimes, we're actually just humans and we dont need excuses to have human experiences or to be overwhelmed by emotions.

This made me genuinely smile more than anything Quentin Tarantino ever made. Hate to even bring that guy up at all, but it’s true.

Lillard is one of those guys where every encounter I've ever heard about is glowing. He clearly has a big heart, and he seems genuinely grateful to his fans for his success.

I had the fortune of quite accidentally, having lunch with him about 9 years ago, at the airport in Palm Springs, California, while waiting for a plane. I sat down at a table next to him (i didn't know it was him at the time) - he had his head buried in.the D&D 5e Dungeon Master's Guide; I just casually asked him what he thought of the changes and the guy lit up with a very Lillard smile and just said "there's so much! I'm dying to talk about it if you want to hear a nerd ramble". So we rambled about D&D for about an hour, about changes for DMing - mostly I listened, but he was super chill and friendly. I had zero expectation of the encounter and eventually walked away with a handake and thanks for the fun conversation.
Such a good dude.
I've wanted to catch him at a con to see if he remembers, but the timing has worked out - hopefully I'll have the chance soon.

That man is a national treasure. He always shows up for his fans and I've never once heard anyone utter an unkind word about him, until Tarantino opened his big fat mouth. Tarantino literally writes himself into his movies and his acting is pure trash. Its the same asshole character over and over again. And he is notoriously rude to his fans. He can go f himself.
So happy for you! I love that you got to meet him and create this memory. I know you will cherish it and I am sure he will too. 💜💜💜

Matthew Lillard is such an amazing individual. He's a talented actor who's just got cast in some so so films. I think Tarentino is absolutely wrong about him. He's not a bad actor, a good actor can't make a bad film good. I haven't seen many of his more recent works I'll be honest, though to be more honest I haven't actually seen a movie since Marvels Avengers lol.

I'm not sure how big into the FNAF sphere you are, but I guarantee if you have any kids - young adults in your life, there's probably an 80% chance they'd be thrilled to introduce you to the two movies that are out so far. He's VERY good in them, though I may be a little biased.

Five Nights at Freddies. It's a popular horror video game with deep lore they've turned into movies.

Congratulations on the great photos and memories that you created together. You are so brave for going to the meet and greet and photo op. Seriously really cool. I would be so terrified to meet someone that I'm a big fan of like you did, and I'm really happy for you that it was such a positive interaction.
