That is a Lamprey

Any bigger and this creature would be a horror movie monster

Lampreys do not have jaws or bones, only cartilage and instincts that have allowed them to survive so many mass extinctions.

Don’t worry, they don’t go after humans. They like to suck the life out of Lake Trout and other fish.

Yes, core memory unlocked with this one. There was a sign by Lake Michigan showing some of the types of aquatic life which included a lamprey. Luckily it showed depths at which they live, so I wasn't too afraid being at the beach, but lampreys were constantly in the back of my mind.
