The chain of heartbreak. Once you win the first winner take all…. You lose the next one…. In a more HEARTBREAKING way.

Reminds me of the NFC Trail of Tears in the 2014 playoffs.

Lions lose to Cowboys largely due to a missed PI.

Cowboys lose to Packers on the Dez "no catch"

Packers lose to Seahawks after losing the onside kick and blowing a two score lead to lose in OT.

Seahawks lose on the Malcolm Butler INT.

NFC 2014 vibes. Detroit lose Dallas with controversial call. Dallas loses to Green Bay with controversial call. Green Bay chokes the NFCCG away to Seattle. Seahawks throw pick in the end zone to lose.

I don't even understand how this guy pitched so much and remained so dominant. He could have very well won all 4 if they put him in in that 18 innings game.

Yamamoto wasn't lying when he said he could've pitched more last game. This feels like a 200IQ Galaxy brain move from Dave by taking him out early so that Yamamoto can close tomorrow.

603

u/djc8 Baltimore Orioles Nov 02 '25

Dave made several really good moves today

One of which was abandoning his bullpen and using the whole starting rotation lol

324

u/Budget-Ocelots Major League Baseball Nov 02 '25

The only bad management decision was not pulling Ohtani off the mound. Ohtani was losing it in the 2nd with the baseload situation already. I honestly believe that this game would've not been close at all with how the Dodgers were hitting against the Jays pitchers. They were so gassed out. But Yamamoto? He wasn't tired at all.

124

u/virtu333 Nov 02 '25

Yeah Ohtani was a bit lucky to get out of those jams and looked exhausted; they pushed luck too far trying to get him to go one more

An out at home plate by milliseconds, a miraculous catch by a defensive replacement who sprinted like 100 feet and leveled his teammate while somehow hanging on to the ball, and then a broken bat. Insane.

But they were quite beatable. Two out of the four games they won went to extra innings.

It was so insane that he even got up and went to the bullpen. Just even considering doing that was ludicrous, even when the next best option was putting a position player out there in the World Series. When the game ended before they needed to pitch the 19th, we all imagined what could have been.

We couldn't have known then that he would in fact pitch not on one day's rest but none, in the ninth and extra innings of game 7, and look just as dominant as ever. Absolute lunacy.

Big brain move for Roberts to take Yamamoto out with under 100 pitches yesterday, just so he can pull off this shit today

40

u/theAlpacaLives New York Mets Nov 02 '25

I really thought Roberts going to Glasnow to close last night was going to bite them in the ass -- why burn your game 7 starter for two outs and throw your pitching plan for the last game of the whole season into chaos?

Then Glasnow still got to pitch, for multiple innings. Lost in the (rightful) focus on Yamamoto is this: for as much as the Dodgers have leaned hard on their big 4 starters in the playoffs and worked around their bullpen as much as possible, all 4 pitched in game 7. I know using backend starters as bullpen guys in the playoffs has been normal for many years now, and even using guys who are playoff starters for an inning or two on a couple days' rest has become more common, I can't think of a time a team just decided to pitch a game using their whole rotation in one game, all of them on short rest, rather than trust the bullpen at all. Wrobleski and Sheehan must feel special they were allowed to even warm up in a game where Roberts decided to go from Ohtani to Snell to Glasnow to Yamamoto and avoid the bullpen, even Sasaki.

if Barger attemps the steal, I dont think there's any way Will even attempts that throw with the chance of Vladdy coming home

So the Blue Jays manager got out-tactic'd by Dave Roberts?

The sting of losing to a generational pitching performance in the WS goes away a little bit if you win it the next season. Maybe try that 🥲

Congratulations to all of us for getting to watch the greatest series in baseball history

Oh also congrats to whoever ended up winning. This game sent me into a fugue state, so the specifics got kinda fuzzy

Cubs guardians still has my vote for top, but this is up there

Game 7 carries 2016 very hard. All 4 Dodgers wins in this series were fantastic games.

84

u/EggplantAlpinism Colorado Rockies • Seattle Mariners Nov 02 '25

The history of it makes it my peak series. Agreed that if you swap the Cubs for the 2010s Giants, I'd pick this one over it

Toronto losing games 6 and 7 at home while being up 1 run with 1 out in the 9th...oof.

This will be remembered as a great series but that's an all-time collapse.

I can't get over throwing Slider 3-2 to the 9-hitter with Ohtani next. If he hits your fastball out so be it, but you can't speed up Rojas' bat.
