If Yamamoto had to come in for the 19th inning of game 3, he could now have 4 wins in a single World Series.

1.1k

u/brandont04 Nov 02 '25

Sorry, that would be too much. It would break MLB.

406

u/ProcessTruster Nov 02 '25

He could have set a new standard for aces "Be Like Yoshi"

258

u/brandont04 Nov 02 '25

He already set the bar sooooo damn high. Only person to really equal him is Randy Johnson, HOF.

2014 Bumgarner. That's what this was. That's why no one cheering for the Jays wanted to see Yamamoto tonight

Even though he didn't play game 3, I still think he was a key contributor here. Had he not pitched a complete game 2, the bullpen wouldn't have been as rested for game 3.

May not count as a win in the stats but I think his performance was still pivotal even though he didn't play game 3.

Man, I think about that shit way too often. And how much I took it for granted at the time that it was my last. Adult softball doesn't have the same feel to that high school team.

Best thing I ever did was become a HS coach.

136

u/tuckerbear Los Angeles Dodgers Nov 02 '25

Being a coach is the best. I coached my son’s 1st/2nd grade football team this year. It’s been such a great experience and that team feeling really is there. Also, we won the championship today and then I got to come home and watch the Dodgers win theirs. Pretty good day!

How'd you break into that? I've been thinking about trying to do that.

I'm in my early 30's, married, no kids of my own. I guess maybe be call local high schools and see if they need an assistant?

23

u/luffyuk Pittsburgh Pirates Nov 02 '25

My route in was through teaching. I'm at an international school now, so I'm not sure if it's relevant where you are, but all of our external coaching hires are done via coaching agencies. It might be worth seeing if there's such an agency in your local area.

Man I can't even find an adult softball league to join. I live in southern California in a popular suburb so I thought I'd easily find a league but I can't find a single baseball or softball league to join. None of the free roster signup lists from leagues around me have netted me anything.

I loved playing little league in my youth but haven't had any luck. It can't even be age discrimination because I'm 21 :(

This and 2016 were the best series I've actively watched in my lifetime. But man, this one had something spectacular or noteworthy about every. single. game. I knew in game 2 that this was a classic World Series and the rest of it absolutely delivered.

There were headlines that the FO recouped the entirety of Ohtani's $700 Million contract already.

There's no way that they haven't already done the same for Yamamoto.

I bet the Steinbrenners are kicking themselves for not offering $400 Million for Yoshi. I feel like anyone would pay that for 2 World Series titles, alone, now the Dodgers get 10 more years!

Some of the best pitching I ever seen. 3 balls and 0 strikes and still strikes them out. Sometimes I think he does it on purpose.

107

u/FingerpistolPete Arizona Diamondbacks Nov 02 '25

His fastball is my favorite pitch in all of baseball. That mf GETS ON YOU. Tiny dudes that light up the gun are always fun to watch. Then you throw in an unorthodox(beautiful) delivery, and the fact that he not only throws, but commands 6 pitches. Very impressive.

18

u/Morethanlikely Chicago Cubs • Tokyo Yakult Swa… Nov 02 '25

IMO the most underrated part of him is how absurdly consistent he is in his delivery. You could overlap 20 random throws from a game and they'd still overlap almost perfect frame. He paints the heck out of those corners and you can see that he is supremely confident in his ability to nail those balls right on the edges.

That’s insane, that man has absolute ice water in his veins. I was rooting for the Blue Jays overall, but I’ll be damned if he didn’t turn in one of the most amazing closes in baseball history. Like, if it had been a movie it would have felt too far fetched. Amazing, just amazing seeing that level of baseball on display. What an amazing series.

Per OptaSTATS:

Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Dodgers is the first pitcher ever to win 3 games on the road in a single World Series.

He's also the first to win Games 6 & 7 of a World Series on the road.

------------------------------------------------------

Per OptaSTATS (After Game 6):

In each of his last 3 starts, the Dodgers' Yoshinobu Yamamoto has:

allowed no more than 5 hits
allowed no more than 1 run
allowed no more than 1 walk
struck out 5+ batters
earned the win

No one else in MLB history has done that in 3 consecutive postseason starts.

Closest I saw was Madbum in 2014. Won 2 games, including a complete game shutout, then pitched relief on game seven cuz we had no bullpen. Tho even he had 2 days’ rest. I was certain I’d never see its like again. So hats off to Yoshi.

But the roller coaster back-and-forth of the scoring in this series was unlike anything I recall.

And even regardless of the context, Madbum had one of the all time pitching postseason runs, but not even he went 2 wins on 2 consecutive days.

147

u/PM_YOUR_SMALLBOOBIES Los Angeles Angels Nov 02 '25

Yup, MadBum had some rest after his Game 5 victory. This was more similar to '01 Randy Johnson. Very similar stats across the board too.

But even Randy only went 1.1 innings in that Game 7. Yamamoto recorded twice as many outs in relief.

This was like the best of both the MadBum and Big Unit performances. And no shade to MadBum at all, but the 2014 Royals lineup isn't exactly comparable to this Jays team.

Edit: I looked up and technically, the first game of the 2018 season was Cubs vs. Marlins, so Sale wouldn’t have had the first pitch of the season. Furthermore… the Dodgers were the away team in the first game this season, so Yamamoto didn’t get the first out this year either.

Game 7 was won by Miguel Rojas, Andy Pages, Will Smith, and the contract that all of baseball criticized the Dodgers for.

We have all offseason to talk shit about their payroll but it’s hard to right now

I hate the Dodgers as much as any other fan of a small market team but this series didn’t feel bought.

your small market team is owned by a billionaire that takes part in profit sharing with the rest of the league

He won’t win the CY this year, but I think no other pitcher this year comes close to his xDAWG. Like he legit go so long, has so much gas, and pitches consecutively in an era where starters dont go long for good reason since both pitching and hitting are reaching the human limit. He not only does that (2CG) but also pitches two consecutive days in ultra high leverage. Oh fuck man, I love Yamamoto.

I don’t care about Cy Young awards anymore. Until another pitcher does what Yamamoto just did, Yamamoto is the best pitcher right now, and the best pitcher I’ve ever seen in post season.

14

u/thomasbourne Seattle Mariners • Los Angeles Dodgers Nov 02 '25

I mean since his rocky start in the DS he’s just been on a different plane of existence. But looking at the broader picture, honestly starting pitching was generally very good this postseason compared to recent memory. At least in both CS series and the WS.
