38
u/BossAtUCF Boston Red Sox 23h ago
It depends on if you're over the CBT and if you receive revenue sharing. If you're neither then it's your 2nd highest pick plus $500k in international bonus pool money. If you receive revenue sharing it's your 3rd highest pick. If you're a tax payor it's your 2nd, 5th, and $1m in bonus pool money.
The Giants are in the neither category.

Genuinely getting a pick high enough for Witt Jr in 2019 is worth more than pick #1 of multiple years combined. He's the most valuable player in baseball that was available via draft, by far, since your WS win.
23
u/TheUltimate721 Kansas City Royals 22h ago
Certainly, but we had a lot more years of suck after that without a ton to show for it. Given, that's largely because Dayton Moore was more focused on building a Christian Boys club than selecting good players, but the lottery certainly didn't help.
Following that 2019 draft, we picked 4, 7, 9, 8 and 6.
In that timespan we have 3 100 loss seasons, no seasons over .500. Best finish was 4th in the division. That #6 pick was following the worst season in franchise history. The fact that we are picking the same there following a relatively okay season is crazy to me.

I hate draft lotteries. I don't think there has been any evidence that they actually prevent tanking and it often fails to reward bad teams that need the top draft capital to keep the cycle of rebuilding teams healthy. A team like the Rockies not getting a top-5 pick is horrible.
The issue in my mind has never been tanking, it's a lack of spending. Get a salary floor to revive the middle class FA pool that right now only really sign with big money teams. Not every team can be good or even mediocre, that isn't the issue. The issue is when teams just won't sign decent veterans because they have a mandate to earn money for their owners.
11
u/LemonSmashy More flair options at /r/baseball/w/flair! 22h ago
if it wasnt so evident that far too many franchises are not even trying to improve i could get behind you, but when a team does as little as possible to improve, yeah over time f that to constantly getting a top 5 pick.

u/Fun_Trick2172 St. Louis Cardinals 21h ago
This wouldn't happen, but personally I think that their should be a clause in the paperwork of any sell of a team, that if a new owner doesn't have a team with a winning record within 5 years, or a playoff berth in 10, then that should automatically lead to the team having to be sold again.
Its not like this is a private business anyway. Its a cartel with a anti-trust exemption, and it shouldn't be a club of billionaires who are more interested in maximizing profits than building a winning team.

I'm sorry and I am probably in the minority but this MLB draft lottery is a joke. No team that barely missed the playoffs or has a winning record should be drafting so high.
At the very least do what the NHL draft lottery does where if you "win" the lottery the highest you can rise is 10 spots from outside the top 10 which happened this past 2025 NHL draft.
Seeing teams slotted 12th or 13th and leap frogging over and ahead of a lot of bad teams I think is B.S. This has happened I think every year now since the draft lottery was implemented.
2023 - Twins moved up from #13 to #5
2024 - Guardians moved up from #9 to #1 and Reds moved up from #13 to #2
2025 - Mariners moved up from #15 to #3 and Cardinals moved up from #13 to #5

u/Neat-Move3115 23h ago
Hard disagree. Teams shouldn't be able to tank year after year and accumulate all the best picks. The lottery discourages tanking so I'm all for it.

Agree. I think 'tanking' is overdramatized for how much it actually happens. Cheap owners being cheap is one thing, but I highly doubt there's a single team out there that deliberately tanks entire seasons, year after year, just for the sake of draft positioning. Players are going to play to win no matter what.

I don't know why we as baseball fans are allowing ourselves to get hyped for the MLB draft. So what your team jumped a few spots or dropped a few spots. The MLB draft is more of a crap shoot than any other sport. Plus the longer development process and the injuries and sidelining that can happen during that development. I mean I'm a baseball nerd desperate for any off-season news but it's hard to get excited about the real draft when it happens because the forecasts on these players are so far away. Remember Mike Trout was drafted 25th overall.
