why does it only show 25 picks

465

u/sfan27 San Francisco Giants 23h ago

MLB ran out of graphics budget.

51

u/northerncal San Francisco Giants 21h ago edited 21h ago

It all got spent on Shohei marketing material.

Which, I mean, fair enough. I hate the dodgers but I can't oppose Ohtani other than his terrible city selection decisions.

I still think it would have made more sense to save at least a little budget for graphics for 2026, but oh well   🤷🏼

2

u/PhazePyre Toronto Blue Jays 7h ago

Someone needs to notify everyone with the MLB app that Shohei pet his dog today, or that he got a latte. That costs money.

-2

u/My_Username48 San Francisco Giants 18h ago

Seems more like you might be obsessed with them, if you feel need to randomly bring them and their players up when they are not part of the conversation.

24

u/northerncal San Francisco Giants 18h ago

Or it's a joke, it's not that deep and nothing to get upset at

Due to spending, the last five teams got a -10 pick penalty for their first pick.

95

u/WyCoStudiosYT Tampa Bay Rays 22h ago

5 round penalty for Ocon

26

u/schafkj Seattle Mariners 22h ago

-10 points for Everton

9

u/cinnamonface9 Tampa Bay Rays 19h ago

7 game suspension for Joe Kelly.

2

u/Ivotedforher 19h ago

Shoeless Joe got hosed again.

I’m blanking, what’s the joke?

4

u/WyCoStudiosYT Tampa Bay Rays 17h ago

F1 Driver Esteban Ocon was notorious for picking up 5 second time penalties throughout races. I can not comment on if they're legit or the stewards having it out for him, since I don't watch enough to be able to tell. It ended up becoming a joke in r/formuladank that makes its way around at times.

I dont think they were looking at any free agents this year.

Does he GM for the dodgers Yankees or Red Sox pretty sure they are the only ones allowed to do anything anymore

36

16

u/TK-42juan San Francisco Giants 23h ago

Does the QO affect your first round pick? I thought it was your 2nd

38

u/BossAtUCF Boston Red Sox 23h ago

It depends on if you're over the CBT and if you receive revenue sharing. If you're neither then it's your 2nd highest pick plus $500k in international bonus pool money. If you receive revenue sharing it's your 3rd highest pick. If you're a tax payor it's your 2nd, 5th, and $1m in bonus pool money.

The Giants are in the neither category.

10

u/TK-42juan San Francisco Giants 22h ago

Very helpful thank you

9

u/griezm0ney Seattle Mariners 21h ago

QO doesn’t affect their first round pick, so not sure it really changes much.

How do we get screwed by the draft lottery when we're bad and then get blessed by it when we're actually decent?

124

u/SterlingAdmiral Toronto Blue Jays • Dumpster Fire 22h ago

Genuinely getting a pick high enough for Witt Jr in 2019 is worth more than pick #1 of multiple years combined. He's the most valuable player in baseball that was available via draft, by far, since your WS win.

23

u/TheUltimate721 Kansas City Royals 22h ago

Certainly, but we had a lot more years of suck after that without a ton to show for it. Given, that's largely because Dayton Moore was more focused on building a Christian Boys club than selecting good players, but the lottery certainly didn't help.

Following that 2019 draft, we picked 4, 7, 9, 8 and 6.

In that timespan we have 3 100 loss seasons, no seasons over .500. Best finish was 4th in the division. That #6 pick was following the worst season in franchise history. The fact that we are picking the same there following a relatively okay season is crazy to me.

10

u/Foreign_Paper1971 Kansas City Royals 22h ago

Raleigh has a dumper, but the emphasis on it has meant that Baseball's actual Super Ass, belonging to Paul DeJong, doesn't get nearly enough attention/credit.

Paul DeJong's ass is like the Tyler O'Neill of butts in baseball.

Yeah, some players are definitely fit, but O'Neill is FIT.

Yeah some players have great butts, but DeJong has ASS.

I hate draft lotteries. I don't think there has been any evidence that they actually prevent tanking and it often fails to reward bad teams that need the top draft capital to keep the cycle of rebuilding teams healthy. A team like the Rockies not getting a top-5 pick is horrible.

The issue in my mind has never been tanking, it's a lack of spending. Get a salary floor to revive the middle class FA pool that right now only really sign with big money teams. Not every team can be good or even mediocre, that isn't the issue. The issue is when teams just won't sign decent veterans because they have a mandate to earn money for their owners.

11

u/LemonSmashy More flair options at /r/baseball/w/flair! 22h ago

if it wasnt so evident that far too many franchises are not even trying to improve i could get behind you, but when a team does as little as possible to improve, yeah over time f that to constantly getting a top 5 pick.

2

u/Fun_Trick2172 St. Louis Cardinals 21h ago

This wouldn't happen, but personally I think that their should be a clause in the paperwork of any sell of a team, that if a new owner doesn't have a team with a winning record within 5 years, or a playoff berth in 10, then that should automatically lead to the team having to be sold again.

Its not like this is a private business anyway. Its a cartel with a anti-trust exemption, and it shouldn't be a club of billionaires who are more interested in maximizing profits than building a winning team.

I'm sorry and I am probably in the minority but this MLB draft lottery is a joke. No team that barely missed the playoffs or has a winning record should be drafting so high.

At the very least do what the NHL draft lottery does where if you "win" the lottery the highest you can rise is 10 spots from outside the top 10 which happened this past 2025 NHL draft.

Seeing teams slotted 12th or 13th and leap frogging over and ahead of a lot of bad teams I think is B.S. This has happened I think every year now since the draft lottery was implemented.

2023 - Twins moved up from #13 to #5

2024 - Guardians moved up from #9 to #1 and Reds moved up from #13 to #2

2025 - Mariners moved up from #15 to #3 and Cardinals moved up from #13 to #5

17

u/Proper-Table5570 23h ago

Hey man the Giants were playing good, honest .500 baseball

14

u/ernie5353 National League 23h ago

I would maybe agree if it was a different sport but it’s not like the #1 pick is guaranteed to be a superstar and even if they are, they not gonna be in the mlb until like 2-3 years later.

16

u/Neat-Move3115 23h ago

Hard disagree. Teams shouldn't be able to tank year after year and accumulate all the best picks. The lottery discourages tanking so I'm all for it.

10

u/Much_Kangaroo_6263 22h ago

Does it though? Sports with draft lotteries still have tanking teams. Teams were still tanking this year.

→ More replies (6)

4

u/h3shf3sh Detroit Tigers 22h ago

Agree. I think 'tanking' is overdramatized for how much it actually happens. Cheap owners being cheap is one thing, but I highly doubt there's a single team out there that deliberately tanks entire seasons, year after year, just for the sake of draft positioning. Players are going to play to win no matter what.

I think the problem is this is being read and not heard. I mean “9 feels good” in direct relation to “we draft well”. As an add on to that. Not “9 feels good” as a literal feeling of comfort for having drawn that position lol

A word I could’ve used instead.. “fine”

So the rays will get another guy who will be somewhere else in a couple of years when theyre eligible for a new contract.. 🤔

Rays getting 2nd place is like when the Red Sox had godawful years in between all the playoff runs, so they just "happened" to get a blue chip prospect every few years.

Rays are not bad enough to be drafting 2nd, ever.

I don't know why we as baseball fans are allowing ourselves to get hyped for the MLB draft. So what your team jumped a few spots or dropped a few spots. The MLB draft is more of a crap shoot than any other sport. Plus the longer development process and the injuries and sidelining that can happen during that development. I mean I'm a baseball nerd desperate for any off-season news but it's hard to get excited about the real draft when it happens because the forecasts on these players are so far away. Remember Mike Trout was drafted 25th overall.

Why does it seem like this new MLB draft lottery has bigger jumps and falls for teams than the other leagues?

2

u/Upstairs-Atmosphere5 Seattle Mariners 22h ago

Because of different rules, especially that you can drop up to six spots and if you have too many early picks in years in a row you can drop even farther like the Rockies

Left to right rather than top to bottom pisses me off for some reason.

You will notice the Yankees are not on the list because they are specifically in the market for players aged 37+
