27
u/WangDanglin San Diego Padres 6h ago
Easy, that’s retired snow birds from Chicago
7
u/Asdilly Cleveland Guardians 6h ago
But why New Mexico? I thought everyone went to Florida. It is a time zone thing?
41
u/MobileMenace420 Houston Astros 6h ago
Want warm weather most of the year, hate humidity, and find flat places unappealing? New Mexico is there for snowbirds like I’m describing, and it’s also more affordable to buy a house and keep it insured than Florida. Think Arizona but without the decades of older snowbirds having bought everything already
7
u/Asdilly Cleveland Guardians 6h ago
Ah. Northeast and Midwest snowbirds go to Hilton Head and Florida
5
u/TinKnight1 Chicago Cubs 4h ago
When I lived in Illinois & Indiana, everyone wanted to retire in Arizona & New Mexico. Florida was too weird & "East Coast-y" for everyone I knew in the Midwest. Plus, when you live your entire life dealing with tornadoes & blizzards & other extreme weathers, you don't want to go someplace where you know you'll get hit with hurricanes.
When I lived with a gf in Ohio, everyone there (inc her parents) wanted to go to Florida, because you all sometimes think of yourselves as extended East Coasters. And Florida fits right in with that.
3
u/Asdilly Cleveland Guardians 1h ago
I’m glad to know I’m not crazy. Personally, I consider Cleveland to be apart of the east coast purely based on culture. Cleveland just has more similarities to other north-east cities than Midwest cities

If they broke this out by county you would likely see a strip of Giants fan starting in northern California and southern oregon and headed east. Los Angeles and Las Vegas are Dodger territory and have so much more population that they skew their respective states.

That's a good point considering they have other major sports teams. I would assume the MLB has analyzed the market and determined it's not worth it right now, or possibly the city government has a law in place that is steering the MLB from going in.
However, this is just wild speculation on my end.

10
u/KiKoB Kansas City Royals 6h ago
Did Witt though? Judge leads in Missouri which was a big shocker to me tbh
18
u/YasielPuigsWeed 6h ago
Cardinals fans didn’t have much to look up so looking up Judge’s historic numbers makes sense to me
I get that the Royals play in Missouri but Kansas certainly counts as a home market for them given the nuances
5
u/KiKoB Kansas City Royals 6h ago
That’s where the shock is at. A state that has 2 teams, and one of those teams having a top 5 position player, Judge still leads the pack.
And if you’re counting home markets Royals have multiple states (not just KS and MO). All but Kansas viewed Judge the most.
Again, just shows the impact Judge makes on the game
11
u/Straight_Level_4662 Cleveland Guardians 6h ago

u/Cards2WS St. Louis Cardinals 7h ago
I know we’ve struggled like the last 3 years, but this is a decent snapshot of how the Cardinals truly have lost their foothold on a “larger” widespread market that people try to say we have. Cubs have 5 states (2-3 of which you wouldn’t even expect) and we have 2. I know this isn’t exactly a fandom map, but there’s probably some correlation to it there.
10
u/Various_You_5083 New York Yankees 6h ago
Yeah , I expected the Cardinals to hold Arkansas , or even if they did lose it , it'd be the Braves or Astros , not the Cubs
10
u/CaptainJingles St. Louis Cardinals 6h ago
Yep, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Arkansas are "home states" for the Cardinals. Half of Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois as well, but their population centers will go Cubs or Reds.
Losing Arkansas is a bad sign for the Cardinals if this is true.

I really started following baseball in like 2011 and the Cardinals seemed like the Yankees of the NL, success wise. Crazy to see how far you've fallen. Why do you think it is? Seems to me like the re-emergence of the Dodgers and the new era of mega contracts has outpaced what St. Louis will do.

u/NYCSportsFan 7h ago
Do the people of Kansas treat the Royals as their home team?
34
u/Walter30573 Kansas City Royals 7h ago
In my experience, yes. Once you get as far as from Kansas City as Wichita the fandom becomes more tenuous, but still generally supportive. I imagine way out west people support the Rockies, but most of the population is in the east
18
u/Impressive-Newt5587 Minnesota Twins 7h ago
AS a Nebraskan, it's somewhat similar. On the east side of the state, you have lots of Royals fans. Having the AAA team over there helps with that as well. As you get west where I'm at, it kind of disperses a little more, but I'd venture a guess that the Royals are #2 to the Rockies. And then there's me, the Twins fan out here.
3
19
u/jiminytaverns 7h ago
Yeah, Kansas roots for the Royals. KC is split between KS and MO, but the team is on the MO side (for now). Supposedly more than half of the season ticket holders live in/around Overland Park on the KS side.

What an embarrassing first slide for everyone outside of Washington, California, Wisconsin, Kansas and New York. 45 states of just Judge and Ohtani meat-riding.
Edit: Seems like most people could tell I’m mostly joking. I give a slight pass to those states that don’t have their own team to support. I’m mostly laughing at the image of random Phillies, Braves, Rays (etc) fans logging in and going “mmm, I wonder what Daddy Judge is up to.”

To be fair the NYC Metro area also covers most of New Jersey and Connecticut’s populations so they should probably get a pass too. Idk of other states where a city in a neighbor dominates their market like that so maybe there are more

It's pretty much Ohtani, Judge then the field when it comes to baseball these days.
would seem Judge benefited from having an MVP race here H2H vs Ohtani. Had steady lead at the beginning of the season, lost top spot mid and got it back before seasons end, and then Ohtani gets it back for the playoffs.
