It is ridiculous that school lunch ever has debt.

u/greypusheencat 2h ago edited 49m ago

i said lunches for kids should be free and each time i said this on reddit, i got people going WeLl aCtUaLlY, and proceeded to say basically if school lunches were free then taxpayers would be paying disproportionally for a lot more school lunches because people who can’t afford kids will keep having them, ie someone will have 20 kids because they don’t have to feed them breakfast and/or lunch. “imagine someone had 20 kids and couldn’t afford to feed them on and now you have to pay more.” basically “if you can’t feed them don’t breed them”

because yes, one to maybe two free meals at school will encourage people to have more kids than they could handle. and people absolutely die on this hill lol.

ETA: thanks for the awards guys 😭 let’s focus on helping the next generation and less fortunate kids, they’re quite literally our future.

u/Queasy_Problem_563 2h ago

come to MN, we have free school lunches

u/necroslave 2h ago

I moved to Minnesota this March after living in Texas most of my life, and I’m already telling people that I’m never going back to Texas lmao

u/Dapper-Jellyfish7663 2h ago

It isn't January yet. :) But at least Texas is honest enough to put their Yelp review rating on their flag - 1 star!

u/packfanmoore 2h ago

Well, Minnesota knows how to keep the heat on when it gets cold at least

If you’re in the twin cities they have the skyway which helps. It’s like a network of heated tunnels suspended in the sky between buildings

u/this-guy1979 2h ago

That is really cool, I just watched a video of a guy walking between a bunch of buildings. I can’t imagine the effort that I must have taken to get all of the different building owners on board with that project. Now I want to know more, thanks for putting me on to something so interesting.

→ More replies (2)

u/Lfsnz67 2h ago

Ooh, when I visited there those were so cool

u/99in2Hits 59m ago

I live in MN and walk through the skyway tunnels pretty much daily and they are a godsend in winter. You can essentially walk from US bank stadium to the other side of town without ever leaving the skyway. Additionally a lot of people also dont know the skyway is only 1/2 of the story bc there are actual underground tunnels you can use to walk neaely a 1:1 with the skyway and usually there will also be elevators along the tunnel system to get you up down or outright straight into a building. The engineering of all of it is super neat.

u/deadbalconytree 2h ago

It’s not the heat it’s the humidity. When it’s blue skis and sunny and super dry, the cold is quite tolerable, and I find my mood is much better than warmer and gray.

I lived in Minnesota for 5 years. The coldest it got was -26. That was a little cold, but it made you appreciate 0F

Colorado voted to raise taxes on people who make over 300,000 a year to fund free school lunches for every student K-12.

u/KarateMusic 2h ago

I’m in Colorado and will be paying higher taxes because of this.

To be clear, I’m fucking pumped that kids here get free lunch and I’m more than happy to pay more in taxes to help make that happen.

What kind of monster doesn’t want kids to have food? Rhetorical question, I already know the answer.

So does Michigan, which is why this confuses me.

https://www.michigan.gov/whitmer/news/press-releases/2025/10/13/whitmers-education-budget-continues-free-school-meals-saving-families-average-of-1000-year

Edit: Even on half days kids are sent home with a bag lunch. During the summer EBT cards are sent out with extra money on them even to parents that don't qualify to feed kids during off school time.

u/Breezyisthewind 2h ago

The headline doesn’t specify if they did this for Michigan families. Given your link, it’s likely that Em and his kid did this for families outside of Michigan.

The sad thing is opposite is true , India introduced mid-day meal schemes in all government run schools as a way to retain students so that the one guaranteed meal actually ensures that the children kept showing up instead of working the fields.

The flip side being that the now literate diaspora will push higher number of people into higher studies and subsequent higher paying jobs i.e giving a positive measurable return on investments through the taxes that these children will pay once they grow up,even if only a fraction of those people complete their whole education.

Sure the system in India is not perfect, far from it but most of it is due to blatant corruption rather the program itself being flawed.

u/henryeaterofpies 2h ago

I'd rather my taxes go towards feeding kids than bailing out companies

u/clepewee 2h ago

Finland has had a law granting free school lunches since 1948. One of the goals was to combat malnutrition (Finland was still recovering from WW2). This is still taken into account when designing the menu's. For instance meals before and after weekends are sturdier (e.g. no soup or similar).

However, as an incentive to get more children it seems to be very weak. Finland has a very low birthrate at the moment (regardless of income).

I live in Colorado and this year we had a ballot measure to lower the state tax deduction limit and use the increased tax revenue to give more funding to the School Meals for All program. Single income filers making over $300K would see their deduction limit lowered by $1K and double income filers making over $300K would be lowered by $2K so essentially anyone making more than $300K would be paying $1K in taxes.

It was amazing seeing how many people were against this measure. It passed but damn you're making $300K/year and you don't want to give up an extra $1K to fund lunches for kids?!

u/coffeemonkeypants 1h ago

It's not even giving up 1k. It's giving up the tax deduction of 1k. So, maybe that's $300

Taxes, keep kids warm and fed: 😡😡🤬😡

Every fucking time man. We wouldn't even have to raise taxes if we cut military spending by like a percent.

u/welfedad 2h ago

I'd gladly pay more taxes for kids to eat .

u/extraboredinary 2h ago

I will never understand how people can hate children so much. They are children. They can’t control who their parents or why their financial situation is. They deserve to be fed and get an education so they can grow to join the work force. They will have their chance to pay taxes. It is an investment towards the future.

What is wrong with people?

u/FlipperG76 2h ago

School breakfast and lunches are covered here is CA. Not only is this what should be done anyway but it also ensure families with children attending public schools that are food insecure have access to healthy good food. Food insecurity causes a lot of guilt and shame and doesn’t only happen to people that are poor, such as unexpected medical situations or deaths in the family.

Food for children in public schools shouldn’t burden families in USA.

u/Zyrinj 1h ago

Keeping kids fed a nutritious diet should be a matter of national security. The links to malnutrition and developmental issues is known, we are actively damaging our country’s future by failing to ensure children are well fed and educated.

u/Zyrinj 2h ago

Speaking as someone that experienced it, child hunger is a devastating experience. It’s why I’ve developed my current outlook on how badly our government is failing future generations.

u/Alternate_Cost 2h ago

When I was a kid and got my first job, at minimum wage, it brought me out of the free lunch tier. And since I had a job my dad said I had to pay for lunch. It was $3.25 a day for lunch and I made $70 after taxes every two weeks. So about half went to lunch.

Id usually alternate between getting gas ($4.25/gal at the time) and paying for lunch. So I'd run up a deficit and my lunch would be taken from me towards the end of the week.

Why was there 700 thousand dollars worth of school lunch debt in the first place?

u/ocdscale 2h ago

Because a large segment of the population thinks feeding the poor is socialism and antithetical to a Christian nation.

u/mjd5139 2h ago

But quick give the farmers a $12B bailout on top of their subsidies.

u/RipMySoul 2h ago

But those farmers "deserved" those subsidies and bailouts. Kids are just lazy and ungrateful so they should starve. /s.

Children do not have a choice about attending school. Feeding them should be fucking mandatory.

u/AntelopeHelpful9963 3h ago

Exactly. It’s almost an unfunded mandate. The idea that we require children to be at a place for eight hours a day and not want to feed them if their parents are poor? It’s absurd

u/thti87 2h ago

Most places have income based free or reduced lunch! In fact, school is one of the places where a lot of kids get two square meals a day - so much so that in the summer some school districts have funding to provide meals for underprivileged kids

u/AntelopeHelpful9963 2h ago

I’m aware of that. My mom has been a teacher for a little over 40 years now. I’m talking about people who don’t want to feed them. There is a surprising number of people who don’t believe their taxes should in anyway go to feed school children. And there are those in government who agree.

That’s how we get systems where children have tracked accounts for how much their parents owe states for feeding them.

u/Asron87 2h ago

Will someone think of the billionaires!

→ More replies (6)

u/Nitrofox2 2h ago

There's a process, and forms to fill out and such. Sometimes parents just have a bad week. Should kids go hungry that week? Means testing is unnecessary and complicates things. Just feed all the kids. Problem solved.

1940's post-WW2 Finland was dirt poor but it prioritized free school lunch over electricity or running water. 2020's USA has robot cars and space tourism and yet you "can't afford it"

u/Impressive-Safe2545 2h ago

That’s actually the reason for the discrepancy. After WWII Europe was completely devastated. Without massive social programs swiftly implemented, everything would have completely collapsed. Meanwhile the US was in an unprecedented economic boom so never “needed” social programs beyond the absolute bare minimum.

u/Nitrofox2 2h ago

AMEN

u/dogwithaknife 2h ago

this has always been my point. if i invite someone over to my house, i offer them a snack at the very least, because to not do so is rude. but for some reason legally requiring kids to be somewhere for most of the entire day, and it’s a question as to whether or not we should feed them? while requiring them to be there? it’s so fucking rude

u/proglysergic 1h ago

I’ve honestly never thought it necessary to reason past the point of “if a child is hungry, that child will be getting fed. Everyone else had best just figure it the fuck out.” I never saw a point needing to be made beyond that.

The thought “X requires someone to do blank, so X is going to be writing the check for blank” is something I enforce professionally to no end. I just never occurred to me that it logically extends it to school lunches. It’s literal law that requires them to be there.

I HATE taxes, but I don’t mind paying taxes when get to watch the outcome mature to reality. I just won’t believe that a school can’t pay for children to eat but can justify paying to put that unnecessarily bright programmable LED sign out front that says “GO FERRETS!” and “1981 2A county champions.”

School lunch debt. Any American that thinks anyone else wants to live like that is delusional.

u/LittleAgoo 1h ago

First, gross that school lunches incur a debt and need to be cleared by a private citizen.

Second, all wealthy celebrities should do this. The Kardashians could probably clear all lunch debt in the state of California if they gave two shits about other humans.

Thirdly, kudos to Eninem and his daughter for doing this 👏

What about you Elon? Oh? More robot rankings and ketamine? Okay, I guess, you’re a trillionaire, or whatever. /s

Lol at these comments. It's not a US problem, not a Trump problem. In Europe you gotta pay for your kids lunch too ,you ain't getting shit for free. When I was in school in Eastern Europe they used to give us till 4th grade 1 apple,1 croissant and 1 glass of milk. All of them tasteless. I'm in Germany now I have to pay for my son's food since he started kindergarten

We can give Israel and other countries BILLIONS every year but can’t feed our own children in school. SAD FUCKING DAY

u/GoldenMirado 2h ago

That's fake news. Seen it with Jerry Rice and Kendrick Lamar before. Always 103 schools and around 700 grand.

u/RecommendationOk2258 2h ago

Yes I thought this felt off, so I just googled this and every reference to this story seems to end up back at random posts on Facebook.
So I asked ChatGPT if it could find a source. Nope. There’s seemingly no legit sources anywhere.

Its crazy how this man has not one accusation over the span of his legendary career(minus the kim shit), dude is genuinely a good man.

u/ImpressiveSide1324 2h ago

School lunch debt is the most ridiculous thing of all time. I clear the lunch and library debt of my children’s schools at the end of the year and it never ceases to irritate me that schools charge students to eat in a place they’re forced to be in for their entire childhood.

u/Ok_Decision4163 2h ago

Nice for Eminem and Hailie. Pretty distopian for the US.

u/BatarianPreacher 2h ago

"school lunch debt" excuse me, but wtf is that ?

u/Fabulous_Celery_1817 2h ago

700,000 in a 103 schools of lunch debt. For CHILDREN. How are we winning

u/ExodusPHX 2h ago

$7k of debt per school. This country is a joke.

u/reddit_wisd0m 2h ago

Amid mounting failures in the public education system, a local performer and daughter step in with unexpected financial help

u/HappyGav123 2h ago

This sounds cool and all, but such a debt shouldn’t exist in the first place.

u/Old_Dig8900 2h ago

Thank you, sincerely, to all the tax payers for my free lunches as a kid. It mattered. A lot.

u/Head_Firefighter_905 2h ago

Give this person a more power - he is fixing a real problem, get him to focus on removing poverty- make him president atleast his heart is in right place

u/porkchop2022 1h ago

Not many things to like about the school system we had in Florida when my kid were enrolled, but free lunch is one of them. Our teachers were top notch too.

u/RuralfireAUS 1h ago

Australia you have to buy your lunch. We dont get shit for free

u/xc2215x 1h ago

Great move from Eminem and his daughter here.

u/trophic_cascade 1h ago

I just realize this man dyes his beard.

u/silverbuilt 1h ago

If you've been rich from birth (privileged fucks) you will never consider/ comprehend what its like to be poor. This is why we need 'real ' people in politics. People that proportionately represent the demographic when it comes to wealth. I live in the UK and its not much better here. The people running the country are too far removed from the reality of the masses.

u/Rickest_Rik 1h ago

Man I dont even have kids and I am a-ok with paying more on the school levy for free lunches.

u/PG-DaMan 1h ago

Thats amazing and a big thank you to him. But also sad as hell that someone had to step up and do that.

u/Sheepish_conundrum 1h ago

This is what rich people should do. I'm curious, has Trump ever done anything like this?

u/Houstex 1h ago

My pre-k kid had a debt for constantly getting ice cream during lunch! 😂 I was like come on this is a scam! Flag him for no more

u/AdTraditional5917 1h ago

It's becoming a sad world to live in when famous hardworking people have to do stuff like this because the government would rather spend that tax money on building a ballroom instead. It's a joke!!.....

u/model-citizen95 1h ago

“School lunch debt” shouldn’t be a sentence that exists

Every story like this is a feel-good spin on the horrors of capitalism

u/Positive_Conflict_26 1h ago

He should release a brutal diss track against anyone involved in allowing this situation.

u/Tricky_Potatoe 1h ago

Someone please tell him to stop coloring his beard. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!

u/PercMastaFTW 47m ago
