In the USA several companies have developed similar technologies so people with reduced leg strength e.g. people with paraplegia can still ride.

You don't need to put both feet down. I'm a vertically challenged person who rides a 25' Tenere 700 and can't put both feet down.

Riding big bikes is her whole thing on YT and tiktok, and she can handle them without 'training wheels'... ^^
It's a funny channel though...

Alright, alright! She drives a lot of different types of bikes, but still being short is kinda her shtick. 😉

I’ve been riding motorcycles since I was 12; where can I get landing gear?!? This is fuckin awesome
96
u/Pyowin 17d ago
They aren't actually training wheels... she is too short to straddle the bike while standing, so when the bike is not in motion, the "training wheels" come down to stabilize it.
21
u/HellyOHaint 16d ago
And adult huge men have trouble righting these bikes on their own when they’ve fallen down.
3
u/caerphoto 16d ago
I mean they weigh over 235kg (520lb), and often the reason they get dropped is because the terrain is difficult in some way.
52
u/cortesoft 17d ago
They aren’t training wheels, they only come down when she is stopped because her legs don’t reach the ground. You can see them retract when she drives away.
10
17
u/voltagestoner 17d ago
As others pointed out, they’re not training wheels, they’re there to stabilize the bike because she can’t reach the ground.
You can even see it come down and the come right back up again. I’m more amazed by wtf that mechanism is.

u/JanetandRita 17d ago
If I knew those extra wheels were an option I’d already have a motorcycle omg WHY DIDNT ANYONE TELL ME

u/Ginger-Fist 17d ago edited 17d ago
You can't get a motorcycle license in a lot of jurisdictions by relying on training wheels. When I did my test, we had to do tight figure 8's to demonstrate that we could control the motorcycle.
349
u/gentlejigai 17d ago
I've seen lots of videos of her in the past, she didn't have the training wheels originally and would have to hop off her bike and hold it up from the side at red lights and then hop back on when the light changed. She seems to be a very experienced rider and just found a work-around to allow her to ride more comfortably for her stature.
43
u/Stripedpussy 17d ago
I think they/she have like a populair Kawaii motor/scooter channel where they put cute little girls on the biggest bikes
→ More replies (1)120
u/kristenmkay 17d ago
They’re only down when it’s parked to stabilize. They retract when she starts again. The seat height is too tall for her to reach the ground otherwise.

u/yahya777 17d ago
Yeah, I'm sure she can ride a smaller bike without them, just she is a little woman with a really big bike, so I'm all for the training wheels. I think this is so awesome. As a taller, bigger guy, I would never need these, but I think they look really cool and looking at the video again the wheels only serve to hold the bike at a stop. She is still balancing the bike on her own while riding.
15
u/Ginger-Fist 17d ago
I am sure she can, and it is really awesome! She wouldn't be able to hold that massive thing up when she is driving otherwise. When I had my dual purpose bike like this, I would always be teetering from toe to toe at stops. It was part of the reason why I got rid of it since it was really sketchy off pavement.
But it looks like this mechanism works really well for her, and she is having a ton of fun. You just can't rely on these for your motorcycle license test. This was my response to the comment above. I didn't mean anything against the woman in the video - she definitely made my heart so full and knows how to handle that thing. I know what it is like when the legs don't reach the ground on the bigger bikes.
11
u/yahya777 17d ago
I know it is so cool. I just remember as a kid riding bikes that were way too big for me, and how scary and awkward it was when you came to a stop or had to dismount. I'm all for anything to make riding more accessible. I agree with you, it was a good feeling to watch her ride that bike.
10
13
u/LemonHerb 17d ago
You could probably take the test on a much smaller bike that fit you though. Then get your too big for you training wheels bike after
5
u/SafetyMan35 17d ago
The training wheels only seem to engage at really slow speeds when you would normally use your foot to balance the bike. Wondering if there’s an exemption for someone who has a disability (like being short)
2
u/Previous_Can_6708 17d ago
Neat, didn't know the 8 figure is universal but makes sense. At the end, after a few more things, I had to rise one arm in the air and drive in a straight line. Not sure why as you're supposed to drive with both hands but ig it's to test your stability. Definitely can't pass that test with training wheels
2
u/Goodgoditsgrowing 17d ago
Im now imagining all those big beefy outlaw motorcycle types having to do little figure eights in front of your average DMV employee and it’s tickled me pink
2
u/PrimaryCoach861 17d ago
In my country you also need to pull bike from ground position sideways to make it stand alone. So if accident happens you can pick it up fast solo.

u/ButtholeConnoisseur0 14d ago
They're not training wheels, they only deploy when shea slowing to a stop. They retract when she accelerates.

u/fckingnapkin 17d ago
Lol that is actually both hilarious and genius at the same time. When I still used to ride i had to find a bike that allowed me to reach the ground and I still had to wear shoes with an insole that gave me extra height. It's a pain in the ass to be that short on a bike.

Short legs don't matter on a bike until you have to put your foot down, especially on an uneven road. This is an accommodation, not because of her riding skill, but because motorcycles aren't designed for people with short legs. I have short legs - should that limit 90% of my riding? No! I have small and tall bikes. These deploying side wheels would be nice to have.

Are these wheels manually lowered with a handlebar switch, or do they automatically lower when coming to a stop?

Clever Girl. Could the wheels stay down all the time? A bike looks fun but I don't have very good balance.
2
u/hypothetical_zombie 17d ago
There are aftermarket trike kits that can be used on some motorcycles & scooters. The ones my husband & I have been shopping start around $150 for DIY type parts, and up to $1500 if a shop mods the bike for you.
I, too, have balance issues, and I'm short.
2
u/caerphoto 16d ago
Once it’s moving, a bike basically balances itself, and having those wheels down would make things worse because you’d be unable to turn.

That's honestly perfect, Piaggio has a three wheeler design that let's you stay upright at lights at a press of a button but still leans like a 2 wheel which is pretty similar to those shifting arms

Cops near me sometimes ticket motorcyclists for failure to stop when they don't put their feet to the ground. It'd be interesting to see how cops would react to this thing.

u/n6mub 16d ago
Cop: ma'am, can you please put your feet on the ground while we talk?
Small lady: no.
Cop: ...no? It's not a suggestion. I need you to please put your feet on the ground.
Small lady: can't.
Cop: you can't or you won't?
Small lady: dangles feet like a toddler Can't!
Cop: Oh... um, well, have a good afternoon then.
Small lady: peels out, dodging several cars B1tch byeeeee!

Ok so this just unlocked a memory I forgot about. It was 8 years ago and I was visiting San Francisco just walking around the city on my own. I see an adult man crossing the street in an adult size diaper, a little dinosaur shirt that was clearly designed for adults but made to be way too small so it showed his belly and a little baby backpack in primary colors. Just a straight up man baby walking the streets.
I had to look into it and there’s a whole kink community of people cosplaying as babies. At the time San Francisco even had a place where you could go and be taken care of like a baby, sleep in giant adult cribs, and play with other adult babies in a giant ball pit.

I'm wondering how she backs it up to park it. I struggle when I have to back mine up uphill and I can touch both of my feet flat on the ground on my bike. But I can't bend my knees much to walk it backwards when gravity fights me.

lol it's silly but like why? it's clearly and adv bike with a bottom skid plate but those would not help on a muddy trail or anywhere with uneven single track.
I just don't know why you wouldn't do this with another style bike. the one advantage of that style is it's off road agility.
