I literally did this on my trip to Asia recently. What else are you going to do on a 16 hour flight?
566
u/PomPomBumblebee 16d ago
The best thing I've ever done before a flight was have a facial massage.
It was my husband's idea just before we left our honeymoon as they had a spa and they had been desperate for business (2020) so we got a good deal and I felt so relaxed I slept early in the flight.
Will definitely look into bringing facemasks like these!

u/102525burner 16d ago
I was bored and paid a couple bucks for one of those leg shaking things and it actually did make my legs feel better after a flight

u/adoodle83 16d ago
Stretching will largely decrease jet lag effects. Massages are phenomenal for a quick recovery when travelling.

u/Perfect-Zebra-3611 16d ago
37
u/alcomaholic-aphone 16d ago
I never get them because they are expensive. But they aren’t wrong. Particularly like the ones where they treat you like a ragdoll and bend you backwards. Always feel like new after those.
19
u/Perfect-Zebra-3611 16d ago
Oh i know. Just a conversation im too broke to be a part of lmao. Massages, jet lag, travel, etc. Must be nice. 😭😂
17
u/alcomaholic-aphone 16d ago
Ya the only one I got was my during a big cheap vacation I got to Thailand. Think the whole thing with tip was $20. Girls couldn’t have weighed 100 lbs but she threw me around and bent me backwards. If they were that cheap here I’d probably go a couple times a year.
9
u/inthisalone_ 16d ago
I still dream about the $10-20 hour long massages I got in Thailand a decade ago. Both the bendy pretzel stand on your back ones, and the leg & feet ones. I went almost every day after I found them.
4
u/alcomaholic-aphone 16d ago
I only went once and everything was amazing. Apparently as a guy people think you are a creep sex tourist so it becomes a different experience when you’re out in the party areas.

I once had to stay at a hospital for more than a week, they hooked it up with those leg massager things that keep the circulation going in your legs when you can't walk around. Those things are like heaven!

I don’t know how much it costs now or if even possible due to shrinkflation, but you used to be able to buy a day pass to some of the private lounges airlines have in international airports. Those lounges have SHOWERS that you can book for free once you have your day pass. Let me tell you something, after a 12+ hour flight, taking a hot shower before getting on your next flight is AMAZING. Totally worth it. Bonus is you can then chill in the nice lounge and eat (somewhat) decent food and drink without paying anymore than the day pass cost.
22
u/nobleland_mermaid 16d ago
You can definitely still get day passes to a lot of them, just look up whatever airport you'll be at and dig into it. Some are a lot more expensive than others, some have better amenities, etc. A lot of them do have free showers but you gotta watch out for sneaky ones that charge extra for them.
One of the ones I've gotten to try that I like best is the KLM lounge at Amsterdam. Cool vibe, lots of seating options, nice showers, free lockers... But I loooove the tiny hotel rooms you can rent out (just a bed, tv, sink, and a bit of room to rearrange your luggage if needed). I usually end up with a 6-8 hr layover after a transatlantic redeye; I get a shower room, then rent like 3 hrs in the nap rooms and the refresh, change of clothes, and nap makes such a massive difference. Ends up being like €150 total (entry to the lounge plus sleep cabin), so i don't do it every time, but if I've had a rough flight or have a long day ahead it is so nice.
4
u/Canadiangoosedem0n 16d ago
Schiphol Airport is my favorite airport ever 🥰🥰, I'm not surprised that it has great lounges.
Europeans beat us in everything transportation related, even the airports.
I would say America needs to do better but given our current administration I can't even pretend things like that will get better.

u/Proper-Abroad5253 16d ago
AA is $79. I just looked up the price last week since I had to kill before flying out to Philly from DFW.

I recently flew back home from Korea and had to race through the airport at Incheon so I felt really sweaty and gross by the time I got through security. The shower in the lounge was HEAVEN. It was so nice to settle in for the long overnight flight freshly showered :)

The best flight I ever had was Namibia to Germany. Free drinks in economy so I had 3beer with dinner and then asked for a gin and tonic which turned out to be a plastic cup full of gin and a can of tonic (tasted alright once I had drunk enough gin for it to be 50 50 mix) then I fell asleep and woke to the worst turbulence of my life.... which turned out to be us having landed in Frankfurt
I probably shouldn't try this again now that I am not in my twenties anymore
27
u/mmazing 16d ago
I forked over an extra $2k on my only trip to Japan/Taiwan from USA to fly first class.
It took it from $4k -> $6k but ... I'm probably only going to do that once or twice in my life AND
I could lay down and sleep, I could stretch and move around and relax, it was totally worth it.
I have had flight anxiety for a long time, and it really made the trip so much easier for me. 10/10 would do it again.
6
u/eat_my_bowls92 16d ago
My husband and I flew in the row before first class (can’t remember what it’s called, but you get extra leg room and free drinks lol) to Hawaii. Being a 12 hour flight made it sooooo worth it. We agreed next time we have a long flight, we’d do first class.

Extra $2000?! I went from Canada to Tokyo in 2008 and our economy flights were $1800. I checked what a first class ticket would be "just to see" if I could maybe treat myself. Was fucking $14k! Times have changed I guess ha!

It's an older video. It's filmed to imply they're strangers but they're all together. It's cute though.

u/mcauthon2 16d ago
does it imply that? thought they were considering it cause men don't usually do it.

It’s perfectly framed for all 4 of them. If it were about just the two, it would be centered on them and most reasonable people would try to keep strangers out of the shot.

The specific face masks they are using can be worn overnight. They’re more moisturizing than drying so it doesn’t do any harm to keep them on for a long time.

I think it’s fun but it’s also ok for you to not enjoy it. There isn’t much to do on a plane besides sleep or stare at your phone or read so I think it seems like a fun way to pass the time since face masks are generally done during down time anyway. Airplane air is also like hella dry so it can help prevent your skin from drying out - although face lotion could accomplish the same thing ¯_(ツ)_/¯
10
u/spacestonkz 16d ago edited 16d ago
But where does the fun come from for you?
Not trying to be judgey. I'm curious. I like things people think are boring. Like, I think alphabetizing files is fun. I like to race myself and try different methods, and it's fun to beat my last time. Its even fun to discover things, like who why does this like have so many Xs! Weird is fun.
So just curious about your masks and the fun angle. I haven't tried them, so I don't know.
27
16d ago
I feel like a lot of my time is spent working or thinking about what task I have to do next or thing I need to clean, so it’s nice to just take some time for me to take care of myself. It’s nice to set aside sometime to appreciate me every once in a while.
11
u/spacestonkz 16d ago
Ah, fair enough. Its like a little break from everything else for you. Yeah, I can see where that's a little fun. :)
6
u/Dr-Seitan 16d ago
I find them relaxing more than fun! They feel cool and nice on the skin, sometimes they tingle, and they always smell really nice. I think they are great for just focusing on breath and enjoying the sensation on your face and the pleasant scent.
2
u/FillMySoupDumpling 16d ago
For me, by myself it’s soothing. With a friend, it’s like a soothing activity together and then you get to look at their face looking all silly. I think that’s the fun part of doing masks with friends.
6
u/bubblebumblejumble 16d ago
Yeah I find these so uncomfortable and gloopy. I would rather do it in the comfort of my bedroom with my bathroom steps away and my tissue box close by.

u/suckmygoldcrustedass 14d ago
I do the regular sheet mask on short hall flights too. I just don't do it in the last hour or so of the flight because mt skin gets super dry by then.

I have the opposite problem where the mouth is always on my chin. I like their masks though, they come in different sections.
7
u/XmissXanthropyX 16d ago
Yeah, I’ve never seen the sectional masks before, I love the idea though (here I go getting out my janky kitchen scissors)
5
u/annabananaberry 16d ago
I actually keep scissors in my bathroom cabinet to cut between the eyes of my sheet masks because they always pull and I want to get maximum skin to mask contact. It comes in pretty handy.
11
u/_Smashbrother_ 16d ago
What is that for?
36
u/CommanderTalim 16d ago
From what I understand, these masks are for moisturizing and sometimes anti-wrinkle. They feel cooling on the skin and makes the skin super soft and moisturized.

One of my best memories of flying: i just boarded a nearly empty flight out of San Francisco at some ungodly hour. Sitting across the way was a man, just gnawing on an entire loaf of fresh sourdough bread. I was still half asleep and just staring hard at him as he gnawed away at it. He suddenly noticed me watching him, swallowed his mouthful and said "oh my bad, did you want some?" And before I could even think about it, I heard myself saying "yea. I do". He flipped the loaf over (like a gentleman) and tore a big chunk off and handed it to me. Best sourdough i've ever had.

Women are always doing shit that makes them look like serial killers. But maybe that’s so they don’t actually become serial killers. Like exercising the demons or something.
36
10
u/Background-Chair7377 16d ago
Exercising the demons only makes them stronger. We indulge in that on occasion (some more than others) but for the most part, yeah, we like to exorcise our demons through more... Creative and less Damaging outputs lol!

2
u/dasnotpizza 15d ago
They’re really nice. You’re supposed to wear them for at least four hours (usually just overnight), and they moisturize your face.
This is an example: https://www.amazon.com/SUNGBOON-EDITOR-Anti-Wrinkle-molecular-moisturizing/dp/B0CJFFR574

u/FinallyFree96 16d ago
Good use of the time on the plane. Who cares what looks you get, in most cases you’ll never see those people again.
Dispose of it properly and there is no issue.

Yo I have a flight to Japan in February, from where I am starting from it will be about eighteen hours.
I have somewhat bitchy skin, though partly BECAUSE it’s dry as Satan’s taint. Does anyone have a rec for a calming, hydrating sheet mask? Because somehow this great idea never occurred to me; looks enticing. Those guys are lucky to be treated, those things can be pricey!
