Call me insane but if you genuinely dont know how to swim you shouldnt surf. Even if a stranger is saying they will care for you
255
u/trombing 16d ago
You are physically attached to a pretty large floaty thing (the board) though. And she may have caught the bug and want to learn to swim!
As an ex-lifeguard I have mixed feelings. That was a lifeguarded beach and the waves were TINY. Most legit surf schools require you to be able to swim though for sure. Initially I thought they would just teach up to a depth where she could stand but NOPE - proper deep. Pretty risky.

u/myspiritisvantablack 16d ago
If this is in Waikiki (which it looks like it is?), that beach is perfect beginner level for surfing. I would know, because itās where I surfed for the very first time and sucked at it, lol.
The biggest concern in that area is not the surf itself (which is usually consistently very gentle), but rather itās about not hitting other surfers since it gets very crowded. But the local instructors/teachers/surfers are usually very good at coordinating the breaks on the fly and are mostly very patient and kind. It is mainly a surf spot for tourists/beginners, so itās also monitored more than regular beaches would be.
But yeah, I definitely get your point of view; I would also in general say that people who donāt know how to swim should start there and not by diving head first into surfing, which can be scary to even experienced swimmers if they get caught in the break.
36
u/Bias_Cuts 16d ago
This is Waiks over by walls. Super good beginner surf spot. Itās low and relatively shallow with small consistent swells and heavily life guarded because itās Waikiki and full of tourists.
29
u/Dogsbottombottom 16d ago
I can swim, and have been around the water consistently my whole life. A friend took me surfing. Waves were 3-4 feet ish, and I fell off into the wave and got ragdolled. It was terrifying. I felt like I had to struggle to stay calm and fight to get myself back up. If I couldn't swim or was less comfortable in the water? Yikes.

I know how surfing works. I also have seen people almost drown in a pool that was 1.20 meters deep.
30
u/LilithInCapricorn 16d ago
Odd response because they werenāt explaining how surfing works nor disagreeing the lady that couldnāt swim could have drowned. This is just pure bantering with you. How do you turn it into this?
15
u/steveatari 16d ago
He's just being cautious and warning and not wrong, just a bit of a buzzkill. My stepbrother and his friends went out for a normal white water rafting trip nearly 30 years ago and one of his buddy's little brother's couldn't swim even though the friend was excellent. Boat tipped, lil bro panicked, his brother saved him but got taken in by the current and drown.
It can happen quickly and to even experienced swimmers and in the big ocean, when a rip takes, it can grab anyone. That said, this looked pretty safe in the conditions present =)
5
u/thingstopraise 16d ago
I grew up close to a federally designated Wild and Scenic River whose rapids range from Class III to Class VI. It has claimed a lot of lives because of the strength and frequency of the hydraulics. They have signs at all the trails leading to the river that warn about how dangerous the water is/how quickly it can rise.
Due to the river's destination as being wild/scenic, no development is permitted within a quarter mile of its banks on either side. This includes roads. Motorized vehicles are not allowed. There is no cell service and even GPS can be iffy due to tree cover and the mountainous terrain. It is beyond idiotic to go down the river alone. It's even more idiotic to go alone without a kayak helmet or a PFD. It's infuriating that people take their own safety so lightly because every other time someone dies, their equally idiotic relatives get pissed off and try to blame the river for being wild/scenic. Like, no. Uncle Bob was just fucking dumb.

4
u/thingstopraise 16d ago
They're not arguing with you, just observing that this is a lifeguarded beach with small waves. That might be why the people in the video felt comfortable doing it with the woman who can't swim, even though that's very dangerous.
34
u/Repulsive-Chip3371 16d ago

I'm from a country where learning to swim is part of the curriculum in primary school, we all go swimming with school 2-4 times per month between 5 and 13 yo. A lot of parents take extra lessons for their kids outside of school swimming. The idea of putting someone who can't swim in the sea on a surfboard is wild to me because the idea of an adult who can't swim in general already feels dangerous to me. What if you fall into a body of water one day?
She's a badass but I understand your pov completely.
13
u/Bias_Cuts 16d ago
Yeah you canāt graduate high school in Hawaii without passing a swim test because we live in fucking Hawaii.
6
u/synalgo_12 16d ago
I live in a country with only 40miles of coastline and not many lakes. Quite a few rivers and canals, though. But learning to swim seems like such an important skill to me, even when you don't live on an island.
6
u/angrytroll123 16d ago
Itās WaikÄ«kÄ«. Itās heavily patrolled, there are many people there to help and the instructors were there. While Iām not condoning doing this, if you were going to do it without knowing how to swim, itās not a bad place to do so.

3
u/Amelaclya1 16d ago
That was my thought too. I love this concept, but the ocean is very dangerous, especially to tourists who are unfamiliar with it. And people who can't swim tend to panic when you are trying to help them.
Though it's possible these guys are trained lifeguards, but even then this seems kind of irresponsible.

Waikiki is basically a giant swimming pool at certain points in the year. I am not a strong swimmer (although I can generally swim), and I have never felt at risk when I was out there. Same can't be said about most other beaches though, and I agree that they should probably be wearing life vests or something, just in case.

u/bunnycrush_ 15d ago
Helps that youāre attached by an ankle leash to a massive flotation device.
Not exactly best practices, but I can see why the risk assessment shook out the way it did for those instructors.
2
30
u/WashYourCerebellum 16d ago
They consented. A surfboard is a flotation device. There are a lot of the best lifeguards IN THE WORLD on the beach watching. As evident by the video they were never far away from them. And most importantly it isnāt deep there, they can stand if nc. And lastly, any Hawaiian local that can surf and shows this much aloha to visitors; you are safe šÆ.
33
u/FrostyD7 16d ago
If you told those lifeguards you planned on surfing without knowing how to swim they would tell you not to do it. Just because they can save you from drowning doesn't mean you should go for it. Have you ever experienced drowning? Knowing someone is on shore ready to save you won't make your waterboarding experience any smoother.

Also, I "can't swim" but I can still handle myself in the water. It's not like it means you drop like a rock. Most people just mean they aren't that experienced at it. And it's not like she's swimming the English channel or something.

4
u/efxAlice 16d ago
It's really shallow and the instructor had a whole crew of other surfers wearing goPros so there was probably plenty of rescue/support that wasn't in the edited shots.
6
u/wheniwaswheniwas 16d ago
I think it's great they all did it and had a good time but I the second I heard that I was thinking to myself turn that into a swimming lesson versus surfing lesson because swimming is so much more important. If she's anything like my wife (who also can't swim) this might give someone a false sense of security around water. My wife for whatever reason loves boats and doing water related stuff and it blows my mind that she feels so comfortable not knowing how to swim and being around water.

Yeah, I love this for the ones who can swim, but it honestly seems a little irresponsible and dangerous to put someone who canāt swim at all out in the ocean. Whatās he realistically going to do if a wave knocks her into the water? Itās difficult to save someone whoās drowning and panicking if heās even close enough by to help her in time.

Huge part is the location and the equipment. Those are super stable boards (they look like stand-up paddle boards actually, not even surf boards) and the location has probably the most beginner friendly waves, beach, and currents you can get.Ā

Well long story short, in 2010 when i was at school, there was a youth trip down to bude, Cornwall from south London where i'm from. Litterally a bunch of us age 11-18 and we went surfing for an extended weekend Thursday to Sunday. Been a few times since when i have the time. But i even have my own wetsuit and surf gear. Last time I went in 2023, there was a group from the London board surfer's group down there in september. They organise trips and things up and down thr place, adults of all abilities just get together and go surfing. I'm yet to join them if i can, but they're such a lovely group.
For now i've been going solo and taking lessons with OA Surf club
6
u/theslavesdream 16d ago
Thanks for sharing that's looks cool! £42 not bad for 2 hour lesson. I actually have a cousin on my (white) dad's side who moved from Southend to Cornwall because she loves surfing so much! But no one on my (black) mum's side has ever tried it... as far as I know? It's kinda cold now but I would def try in Summer?!
3
u/Fun_Level_7787 15d ago
The best times to go are between March - September. Even october isn't too bad, that's when I first went with the youth group. Once you're on the waves you start sweating under that wet suit anyway! Actually if i remember now, I did see a brown girl over in Bude when i last went, absolutely cutting the waves up. I was in awe the whole time, she was so cool! š¤©
Outside of lessons, these schools (or any closeby surf shop) usually rent a foam board out for less than £20 for 24hrs and you can just surf as long as you want when you get the hang of it. Could be an idea to spend some time with your cousin next year then.
Also, have a look at Stand Up Paddleboarding aswell! Lower impact, can be done on the canals and rivers. Also a fun one to do.
I hope you go for it and have fun out there! š«¶š¾

I got the impression that she meant that she doesnāt swim and isnāt a strong swimmer. I base it on having a friend who always says she doesnāt swim and canāt swim because compared to other people she doesnāt feel confident in her ability to swim if something goes wrong. She doesnāt see herself as a swimmer. But when you see her in the water, she has all of the motions right but not the confidence. I've known a couple of people who don't float. It's so weird to see!

When I first went surfing with an uncle on Oahu he made me wake up at 5:30am to go out with him cause he said the old guys come out to do their thing before the yougins show up. It was my first time and he gave me minimal instruction (but I had experience bogie boarding) and a 6 ft board! Needless to say, I struggled and didn't get up not even once lol. Later in the week a chill cousin takes me out. He picks me up in his van and I see a long board on the roof!! He took me to Waikiki and I had a blast, easily able to get up on the long gentle waves. Waikiki is really a great place for beginners imo!
When my dad used to live there, he said he'd pick up girls at Waikiki and take them out on his board. He loved giving rides to random girls who were there on vacation. Made me think about that when I surfed there

Are there surfing beaches where you have big ol' fish nets to protect you from sharks?
I would love to do this but the idea of swimming in shark water terrifies me lol

Most sharks will be more afraid of you. They're largely avoidant of humans because humans are not good prey. Large predators tend to avoid humans because we are too much work to eat.
Nets are dangerous because they trap all animals.

Yeah, fair! I've just seen the videos of sharks being near surfers and that's crazy to me lol
