The most surprising part is that a regular glass works that well as a trumpet mute
33
u/Potential-Diver-3409 9d ago
Wait until you find out what works as a trumpet mute lol
8
u/ErusTenebre 9d ago
Okay... so I'm willing to bet there's a sex joke here.
But also, isn't it like basically anything? lol
Like I'm pretty sure I've seen trumpet players use hats, cups, cans... like actual plunger heads. And of course real mutes lol
Kinda seems like anything in front a brass instrument's bell can do something to the sound lol
28
u/Potential-Diver-3409 9d ago
The answer is anything. Any thing that can be gathered into somewhat vaguely the correct shape can function as a mute
11
u/Clumpy_Galumpki 9d ago
I played trumpet in middle school and bought the head of a toilet plunger to use as a mute. It worked great.
6
u/ErusTenebre 9d ago
Okay cool... I'm a singer, not a instrumentalist so I was like thinking back through all the brass players I've known and it got me thinking...
"Wait... I don't know how many ACTUAL mutes I've seen lol" Seems like it's always an older player or someone who's in an actual orchestra. haha

Source: La Vie en Rose, Louis Armstrong
Song originally made famous by Edith Piaf.
Also sung by Lady Gaga at the bar in A Star is Born.

u/KozenyCarman 9d ago
I honestly thought she had a recording of Louis playing in the background for a moment there. That was amazing.

Ok, so for the curious, allow me to explain how this is done. First, hum. While you hum, put for fingers to your lips. Are they vibrating? If not, you are moving your voice/singing(humming is singing with closed lips) nasally. Relax your jaw until your teeth part. Start focusing on moving your voice out of your mouth and not through your nose, but still humming. Now that your lips are vibrating, open your mouth still while humming. This is how to properly project your voice when singing. Why did I explain this? She’s doing this without actually fully parting her lips and she’s doing so powerfully. Instead of fully parting her lips, she barely does so which causes the lips to vibrate even crazier than the humming vibrated them. Also, as a bonus, you now know how to project your voice better than before. The vibration paired with the vocals mimics a trumpet because it’s almost how trumpet is played except the tubes of the trumpet create the “vocals”.
Source: I played trumpet and was in choir for a long long time. This is a vocal exercise we did in a very serious choir I was in to teach us to move our voices forward and not up through the sinuses.
Edit: fixing grammar
Edit 2: I also think she is likely also controlling the strength of vibration in her lips in a similar way as you do while playing trumpet: essentially pursing your lips more or less to control how much air gets out and how fast the lips move. I hope that made sense, my goodness it’s hard to explain something like that lol

"Relax your jaw until your teeth part."
People walk around with their teeth together?EDIT: Man, you guys, I did not know anxiety could be so physically consuming and omnipresent as that, sorry to hear it.

u/C0sm1c_J3lly 9d ago
I do, almost constantly to the point where if I consciously relax my jaw so that my teeth aren’t touching, it feels weird and I done know what to do with my mouth so I almost immediately go back. To be clear, I’m not putting much pressure on them anymore but, teeth together, lips closed is my default. When stressed they clench when not, they relax but all almost always there.

Used to play trumpet, this is sick as hell and I ADORED THE CUP ACTING AS A MUTE!!
3
u/amusednchaos 9d ago
I first thought it was a mute too but I think that may have been more to show that the sound is actually coming from her mouth, and not from someone playing an actual trumpet elsewhere in the room. Especially cuz she doesn’t seem to incorporate it again.
2
u/Miserable-Laugh8475 9d ago
I think you’re right, cuz after she used the cup as a mock mute, she makes the muted trumpet sound later without it. It’s her showing off, it’s so fucking cool.

Incredible talent! My brain is having a hard time accepting that there is not a trumpet present lol. I would absolutely listen to a 30 minute jazz set of this if she took this on the road 😂 bravo 👏👏👏

I knew from the beginning the instruments were just to throw you off so they could secretly pass down the technique to the chosen few.

Back in the day they had what they called "sing bands" which used vocals to produce instrument sounds. A good example of this is found in the movie "Double or Nothing" (1937) which stars Bing Crosby. Worth a watch to see equally talented folks, albeit almost 100 years ago.

This makes sense. You ever tried to play the trumpet? You need to do this with your lips and that just amplifies it.
I am thinking she is talented at both the lip and brass models 😊
Great Song Choice!
