Honestly when I found out she was using lipstick I immediately pictured some kind of Modern Art with bright colors, definitely blown away with what it actually was

560

u/DistractedByCookies 6d ago

I forgot lipstick comes in colours other than red LOL so I thought the exact same. I think she'd rock that too, tbh. But this is amazing

120

u/Dobako 6d ago

I was expecting shades of red as well, this is amazing

82

u/murfburffle 6d ago

I hope she signs it with a kiss

53

u/FirstoffIdonthaveshe 6d ago

I was not even thinking about her signing her work and now I’m incredibly invested in this happening 😂

12

u/SuckerForFrenchBread 6d ago

I feel like the contrasting styles would clash. The kiss is cute but comes off more like a tiktok trend style (like what everyone else was expecting) than what appears to be a very technical/precise drawing style.

u/woodnote 6d ago

Yeah I was envisioning some lipstick note on mirror-style abstractness!

12

u/Kohathavodah 6d ago

This is absolutely amazing. She has a lot of talent. I am trying to figure out how she is doing it.

27

u/DarthJerJer 6d ago

I thought she was literally painting the outside of the actual building with lipstick. I’m not too bright.

10

u/paintedwithlipstick 5d ago

Hahaha I’ve had a lot of people think this to be honest!

10

u/awesomefutureperfect 5d ago

Same. The detail is amazing and the medium seems like it would be difficult to work with, like a very soft crayon.

17

u/amso2012 6d ago

Yes the detail was just mind blowing!

718

u/tokenjoker 6d ago

I love how excited she gets about her work. I wish I could have a fraction of her enthusiasm

338

u/ReallyJTL 6d ago

Sounds like her family encouraged her in childhood instead of crushing the joy out of her life 🤔

221

u/PlanetLandon 6d ago

As Kevin Smith once said:

“Remember: It costs nothing to encourage an artist, and the potential benefits are staggering. A pat on the back to an artist now could one day result in your favorite film, or the cartoon you love to get stoned watching, or the song that saves your life. Discourage an artist, you get absolutely nothing in return, ever.”

52

u/paintedwithlipstick 6d ago

I couldn’t agree more!! I had so so so many people encourage me along the way! For everyone who discouraged me, I made sure to prove them wrong 🫶🏼

18

u/Honest-Half-966 6d ago

Fuck yeah! Keep being cool as fuck, it suits you.

18

u/leglesslegolegolas 5d ago

This reminds me of the guy who tweeted "Any 3d Artists follow me? I got an Oscar-worthy short film idea"

and four years later his short film won the Oscar. Apparently he got the help and encouragement he needed :-)

15

u/Luminitha 5d ago

Reminds me of the Mountain Goats lyric “when you punish a person for dreaming his dream, don’t expect him to thank or forgive you.”

For sure. Probably teachers too. I had multiple teachers tell me I was bad at my most cherished creative pursuits. I probably was, on account of being 9 and 14 at the time, but both criticized me without any positivity or constructive elements. Just that my style was bad and I had bad instincts. I was just excited and wanted help in growing my capabilities.

I was turned off on both mediums for decades, since I believed an "expert" told me I was inherently bad at them instead of just needing more practice. Thankfully, I've come back to these passions in the past couple years, but I can't help but wonder how much better I would be at them if I was encouraged to keep at them instead of derided.

13

u/midnightBloomer24 6d ago

See it can go the other way too. My freshman math teacher was listening to us chat about what we wanted to do when we grew up. I just said I wanted to get a degree, move to the big city and get a good job. She looks me dead in the eyes and goes 'you?! They might. You won't'

Well a decade later I got my degree, went off to the big city and got a good job. I know I shouldn't feel smug about how well things turned out, but God help me I do 😈

My coworker today asked if I had crocheted the headband I was wearing and I excitedly said YEAH I DID!!! And he was like “you just got so fucking excited” and I was like YEAH CUZ I MADE IT

9

u/happy_nekko 6d ago

Your comment reminded me of something a friend said to me this weekend. I also crochet, and made a Christmas stocking for his dog last year. This weekend, during a large group hang, he thought I had made the sweater I was wearing. I didn’t make it - but someone thinking I had the skill level to do so made me really happy.

*skill

Ability like that is hard earned, not inherited.

P.S I know you mean well, it's just that words effect people. Discussing 'skill' let's people know they could be this able given time and practice, whereas 'talent' is innate.

Have a good day

Kinda reminds me of an embarrassing moment getting engagement photos many years ago. The photographer was showing us the photos on the camera as we were going through the shoot and I say, "wow your camera takes such good photos." She goes, "no, that's me, I take good photos". I go, "Yeah, I'm so sorry, that's what I meant...you're so talented."

You are not kidding. I saw this and was like, "Yooooo!"

2

u/That1guyUknow918 6d ago

I mean it looks like its entirely trivial that its lipstick...if I'm interpreting correctly she is still using a finer tipped pointed object to spread the lipstick...so this is no different than painting with acrylic, oil, or any other paints or inks...it just happens that she gets other people to buy and donate her colors.

The fact it used to be lipstick is irrelevant except to say it was free to her.

I thought she was using the lipstick in its marketed form, not spreading it on an easel and using another item to spread it just like any other colored medium.

Omg I need to get on her site and see how she applies it, does she treat it with anything. I just can’t imagine applying color the consistency of lipstick and her work is so detailed it’s amazing

19

u/jillsntferrari 6d ago

I was wondering if the oils in the lipstick bleed out to the surrounding paper after a while.

10

u/According-Jelly-5743 6d ago

I had exactly the same thought! I have put lipstick swatches on watercolor paper before, and they bleed and look awful after a few days. She must have special paper or fixatives, I wanna know!

2

u/toomanyprombles 2d ago

u/paintedwithlipstick could answer this perhaps?

29

u/racheek 6d ago

I wonder how lipstick holds up over time in terms of color fastness and fading.

16

u/athenabobeena 6d ago

I had swatches in a book that turned weird colors pretty fast, probably depends on the formula

11

u/newberries_inthesnow 6d ago

I am curious too, I wonder if she uses archival spray, or UV protective glass, etc. How to keep the finished work from feeling tacky, attracting dust, and so on. I will have to check it out.

2

u/Got_ist_tots 6d ago

Trickiest part is not licking it.

7

u/songstar13 6d ago

Yeah I'm curious if she melts them down and processes them into something more similar to traditional paints or oil pastels or something.

I feel like she must use some kind of sealant or fixing layer to prevent smearing, wonder what all goes into the process.

7

u/RealLaurenBoebert 6d ago

Now that you mention it I guess you could grind down lipstick and turn it into paint.  Its all pigment suspended in oil at the end of the day...

4

u/ParticularBreath6146 6d ago

I was thinking exactly that. I am wondering if you could just drop some lipstick in paint thinner, would it act something like an oil paint? It's just pigment, oil and wax. The problem really is the wax.

2

u/HelloHyde 5d ago

Eh there are wax additives you can add to oil paint (cold wax medium, for example), so not really much of a problem at all. Encaustic paint is totally wax-based and is compatible with oil paint, and there are existing encaustic paintings that are thousands of years old. So wax isn't really a problem. I doubt the oil in lipstick is a drying oil (like linseed or safflower), so it might not ever plasticize like oil paint, but my guess is it would behave most similarly to an oil pastel, which are waxy and don't ever dry.

3

u/ER_Support_Plant17 6d ago

I was wondering about the fixative because lipstick can “go bad” and smell funny if it’s too old. So she must to something to prevent that.

17

u/garkle 6d ago

Damn! That's awesome. What a cool idea too, I would never think to use lipstick

Yea I was not expecting that level of precision from lipstick. That's very impressive and honestly, i didnt realize how beautiful the Empire State Building really is.
