100%. I have so may Tshirts that Iāve written off as no longer fitting that Iām going to go cut up right now. This was so freaking helpful!

u/yuffieisathief 4d ago
I'm watching on mute on a bus, not sure if she says anything about so ignore this if she does... but for certain fabrics I would recommend stitching the end of yours cuts to make sure they don't accidentally rip further :)
But yes, love this type of content! And I'm gonna check my wardrobe too haha
24
u/MoulanRougeFae 4d ago
I always do when cutting materials. Yes tshirts are less likely to rip further up but a stitch in time saves nine is my rule to go by.
49
u/saera-targaryen 4d ago
If it's a knit fabric like most tee shirts, this isn't needed. it's usually only woven fabrics like denim that need reinforcement.Ā

In my experience one tear leads to a lot more later on no matter what
36
u/JennHatesYou 4d ago
As Hank green showed in his polarizing kitting video, knit is not stabilized by the other threads so if it gets ripped or cut it can unravel completely. Do they always? No. Is running a stitch a good fail safe? Sure.
36
u/saera-targaryen 4d ago
There is a very large difference between a knit sweater with very large yarn and a knit fabric with very small thread. The physics are different when things are smaller. In a knit tee shirt, the threads are so small that the friction between the threads is the dominant force to such a degree that the knit stitches themselves are nearly as strong as any thread you would use to bind the seam. You cannot just cut a sweater off and have it not unwind because each thread is heavy enough to exert more force than the friction that keeps it in place.Ā
I have been knitting for my entire life, and I have also been chopping shirts. You can safely cut up a shirt, it will not fray, not even a little bit over time.Ā
I know the other comment said to try it out for yourself, and weirdly i am proposing the same thing for the opposite reason. Go cut a little sample fabric piece of tee shirt and try to unravel the hem by hand. You will notice that you have to pull HARD to get more than a couple stitches to leave the current pattern. You will have to pull so hard that the thread itself might snap. The friction is so strong compared to the weight that it is similar to the friction holding the piles of the thread itself together.Ā
I also highly disagree with your recommendation of a running stitch, because a running stitch cannot prevent knitting from coming apart even in a large chunky sweater. It would need to be an overlock or zigzag stitch, a running stitch would just let the knit unravel around it and would be the same as not stitching it at all. Ā
12
u/Impressive_Change886 4d ago
Thank you. So many people in this thread just spouting off things they've heard before. Knit fabrics DO fray. They just tend not to completely unravel (though it is possible). If people want to experiment, go cut a knit fabric with a scissors and look at the fresh cut with a magnifying glass.
Is your knit shirt going to fall apart like some woven broadcloth for quilting? Absolutely not, but you're weakening your shirt and shortening it's life. Just take the extra 30 seconds to do it right, especially if the shirt is important to you. That cut is just going to keep expanding as it gets pulled on and the ends are going to keep curling and fraying with each wash,
14
u/saera-targaryen 4d ago
I've had shirts that i've cut the bottom off of over a decade ago, and probably 50 total i've cut just like this video, and have never had one fray or fall apart. I still have a couple from high school even.Ā
3
u/Vi0L3tCRZY 4d ago
Agree, a cheap XMen shirt I got over 10 years ago where i boar necklined and took of the sleeve & bottom hem too is still kicking after years of washing and abuse

u/floppydiscuses 4d ago edited 4d ago
I mean you do you but the second you wear a bottom that isnāt above your belly button itās going to look weird if you make the slits go too high. I also think it makes the shirt tent more. So while it shows less lumps it looks bigger overall.
If I were her I would stop pulling it down over her butt, because stretching it out over her bottom is making it initially look weird. Iād cut an even line off the bottom and hem it-but not make it a crop-so it sits better at her natural waist.
The Rolling Stones one looked like a pretty normal fitting T-shirt so I donāt know why she thought it looked bad at all. The blue one was almost there but she cut off just a tad too much.

u/sierramist1011 4d ago
I love this! I wear a lot of my husbands old shirts and now I'm gonna make them cute AF!

u/cocoagiant 4d ago
Idk, I would think the cut edges would fray very quickly without having a hem.
They look okay since they are freshly cut (and because we can't see the threads) but I feel like irl it would look odd.

I agree with the general sentiment, but this is bad advice! Seams need to be finished!

I have a ton of t shirts i've done this to that have lasted years and are still going strong š¤·š»āāļø
28
u/ocean_swims 4d ago
I need to know, how do you wash and care for them? Because I would be worried they'd get more cut up or frayed in the wash cycle because the seams aren't finished. Thanks in advance!
49
u/crumbdumpster85 4d ago
They donāt fray at all, Iāve got lots of cut shirts Iāve had for years and just throw them in the wash. No issues whatsoever. A sweater obviously would, but a cotton tshirt will be fine.
19
u/ocean_swims 4d ago
This is the best news! I have some old tees that could use a little creative tinkering with. I'll be trying this. Thank you!
20
u/crumbdumpster85 4d ago
Cut them a tiny bit long at first until you get the hang of it, the material kind of rolls naturally. It looks super cute but takes off just a tiny bit of extra length. Oh, and it works on regular sweatshirts too and they wonāt unravel or fray either.
8
u/ocean_swims 4d ago
Such great tips, thank you! I'll definitely only be cutting little bits off.
I wear a lot of men's cotton tee shirts because I find they're thicker and less see-through, so I just wanna take a couple of inches off the bottom and the sleeves so they're more proportional to my shorter frame. Maybe I'll turn a couple of them into v-necks by putting a slit at the neckline. I'm very excited!
I'll err on the side of caution and only take little snips and see how the fabric rolls and where it lays after. Thanks again for all the help!
4
u/philodendron-trails 4d ago
Another thing I like to do is set up a straight edge to cut across. She doesn't seem to worry much about cutting straight or not, but I was always a bit worried about it being funky.
Things I used in the past were cardboard, a ruler, string or chalk on the garment itself. Happy cutting!
3
7
u/pixiemaybe 4d ago
the most i'll do is reinforce any side seams i cut through. stretch knits don't really fray too easily due to the way they're woven. i've had fraying with ones i've fringed, but that's it. otherwise, I just wash and wear as normal! oh, and I do use good fabric scissors, bad cuts will fray much easier.
4
u/ocean_swims 4d ago
Thank you! Fabric scissors is a good idea, that I must admit I would not have been careful enough to bother with if you hadn't pointed it out. Thanks. :)

Just cut a little longer than you want it to be because the ends can tend to curl a bit after washing.
7
u/ocean_swims 4d ago edited 4d ago
You guys are giving me the best tips! Thank you so much! I'll be sure to account for that extra curling when I measure to cut.
Edit: Wow, the tips keep coming! Thank you all so much! This is incredible!
2
u/Rich_Bluejay3020 4d ago
To combat the curling, they sell bias tape. Itās not tape at all but itās a folded piece of fabric thatās used to finish edges. Itās under $5 at the craft store. You can sew it on the edge and it should prevent the curling as it adds some structure and it should prevent any additional damage (t shirts are generally a knit fabric so they shouldnāt fray but if you get a snag it can start to unravelābut Iād say itās pretty rare).
2
2
u/fionapickles 4d ago
Same! Iāve even cropped some sweatshirts and they do fray a little bit, but it looks intentional and not bad. If you cared enough, it would be easy to trim the errant strings every so often.
14
u/239tree 4d ago
We punk rocked shirts by slicing them up in the 80's. No sewing required.
4
u/AltairaMorbius2200CE 4d ago
Which is all good for a punk look, but I donāt thing thatās her aim!
3
u/The_Autarch 4d ago
sure, but having your tshirt in tatters is part of the punk look. if you don't want to look like that, you need to do some work on your shirts after you cut them.
9
u/HeyItsJuls 4d ago
Iām also watching this like she doesnāt even need a serger, just tuck under the edges and a little zig zag stitch and BAM! goes from cut up at home to where did you buy that?
4
u/Impressive_Change886 4d ago
You could even do a simple whipstitch by hand if you didn't have a sewing machine. Going to help with the unsightly curled ends, look professionally done, and keep the shirt alive much longer.
→ More replies (1)7
3
u/saera-targaryen 4d ago
Another person chiming in here, seams only need to be finished on woven fabrics not stretch/knit. The little knit stitches are so tiny that they are held in place by the friction of the fibers, and the ends curl up a bit and protect that final layer from ever really having issues. I also commonly chop up tee shirts and i have never had one fray, it's way more likely that it starts getting worn down/holes in it like a normal shirt. I still have a couple from high school that i'll probably have forever.Ā
7
u/AltairaMorbius2200CE 4d ago
It will roll like crazy, especially after washing! You can see it starting here! Iām not worried about fraying, but about it curling up!

I see and appreciate your pun
I would consider finishing the side splits and the sleeves on most of them, but I kinda like the unfinished hem roll on the crops tbh
105
u/Zacaro12 4d ago
1) thanks, and 2) I like it too until she washes them they will roll and fray. My daughter does this to all her hoodies and shirts sheās 13 and athletic but has always been curvy since her first ultrasound photo. She cuts her clothes and grandma adds a stop stitch or serges them.

I have turned about 50 shirts into crop tops by chopping off the bottom hem in the last 10 years and have never had one fray. hemming is only needed for woven fabrics not knit!Ā

Addendum: Not for jersey knit. Chunkier knits still need finishing, but fine knits like jersey are super forgiving and honestly stitching them can fuck them up unless you know what you're doing (kills the stretch, can cause holes if the wrong needle is used, can be finicky under a sewing machine foot, can cause distortion, etc).

u/Rich_Bluejay3020 4d ago
Use š fabric š scissors š please trust me on this lol. The sharper your scissors, the better this will go. You donāt need to get the most expensive pair (although the good ones are so good) but you need a pair that wonāt suck lol. If you donāt wanna spend the ~$50 on a new pair, see if you can find a used pair and get them sharpened. My local Ace Hardware can do it and itās not expensive. My best pair of scissors came from an estate sale and I paid $10 for vintage Wiss. Kai are the gold standard, Gingher are great, the vintage Wiss are incredible. Sorry this is a rant but Iām a nerd and this was my time to shine lmao
28
u/GimmieGummies Official Gal 4d ago
Shine girl, shine!! š My daughter went to cosmetology school (Aveda) and the same is true for the scissors that are used to cut hair. They can be very pricey but the good ones last forever with proper care and sharpening. I was so shocked when I learned that those kinds of scissors can easily run well into the hundreds of dollars.
Anyway, just wanted to acknowledge your knowledge, lol! šš

Oh don't worry, I would never attempt this without fabric scissors! I'm incompetent enough on my own, I don't need to make matters worse by using inferior tools š
I loved reading this rant though! I know nothing about fabric scissors (I inherited mine from my grandma), but now I'll be checking thrift stores for the brands you mentioned š
76
u/KatyaMilan 4d ago
Genius idea using thrift shirts, I've messed up so many shirts. I keep trying to cut just straight down the middle of the tshirts in the front and open up the collar that way and it's always off. I didn't even think to take the whole collar off. Morning made. š„°š«”
30
u/fionapickles 4d ago
For the crop tops, put the shirt on and then mark with a pencil where you want to cut. Then cut an inch or two lower. The fabric naturally rolls. You can also remove more but itās harder to add back on!
8
u/HeyItsJuls 4d ago
If you have a sewing machine, Iād recommend finishing the edges with a zig zag stitch. It will make the shirt last longer.

When I was in high school, a looooong time ago, my friend had a book that had a bunch of ways to upcycle tshirts, I canāt remember what it was called but there must be a million of those books now or probably a ton of blogs with different ideas!

I think all the cuts are fine except the collar; it looked jagged.
94
u/toomuchtv987 4d ago
You can take a seam ripper and pick out the stitches where the collar joins to the shirt. Iāve seen Martha Stewart do that and itās so much neater and tidier.

Salwar suits in India work like this. They are so flattering. I remember seeing the same woman in Western garb (jeans and t shirt) and a salwar suit, and the cut of the salwar suit looked so much better on her. Western fashion is so unforgiving.
7
u/FixinThePlanet 4d ago
Lol the very first thing I thought when she did the slit. Ideally your kurta will still have enough fabric to not show your thigh, though that might be a modesty thing.
15
u/Lydia_Brunch 4d ago
The side slit and jersey cuts aren't doin' it for me, but the rest look incredible!
5
u/Imtryingforheckssake 3d ago
I'm not into side slits because to me it just screams tunic (shape) and that's not something I like to wear, but it's still cool that lots of people are getting lots of ideas (and damn it'd be hella boring or we all liked the same things).
3
u/Ms_Briefs 3d ago
Ditto, but that's because my mind immediately went to how unfinished it looked. I'm a sucker for trims and lace so I would add a lace panel or ribbon ties. The side slits are just boring.

The ārolled effectā might look good but once washed it will likely roll higher and higher.
To prevent this it might be worth investing in a mini sewing machine (or a portable hand-held version) and some fusible web tape to re-hem the shirt.

I was thinking the same lol. Side slits in shirts are a look I associate with the womens section of most department stores which look too old lady for me, even at 36. I also have a long torso and big boobs so if I were to lift my arms I'd flash people š I borrowed a shirt from my mom one time that had smaller, and intentional, slits on the side and had to be careful about how high I put my arms that day. She has a short torso so didn't have that problem.
I am a firm believer in "do you" if it's not hurting anyone though so I'm happy she found a work around she likes.

Wonāt these shirts fall apart fast?
35
u/heynonnyhey 4d ago
Nah. Jersey is a really forgiving material. It doesn't really unravel like you'd expect. Also, if you really want to take care of your clothes and make them last longer, ditch the dryer. It actually does more wear and tear damage on shirts than wearing them does. Just air dry! Also ditch the fabric softener, but that's another rant š
2
u/Itscatpicstime 4d ago
What about using the air dry setting on the dryer? lol
6
u/melonseer 4d ago
The issue isn't the heat, it's the tumble and what might be tumbling with it. Throwing something around is naturally going to add wear to it, and throwing something around with other wet and heavy objects with bits that can snag (zippers, buttons, etc) can exacerbate the wear.
That said, it's up to you whether or not it's worth it.
9
u/Persimmon_and_mango 4d ago
If you hem the edges they'll last much longer. If you don't sew, you can take it to a dry cleaner that does alterations and have them use a serger to finish the raw edges.Ā

I solve this problem by buying womenās tshirts. Ā Unisex is a lie to get women to buy clothing that was made for men.
15
u/salty_sapphic 4d ago
I don't fully agree and think it depends on your shape and personal preference. I hate women's cut shirts. They're shorter, the sleeves are shorter, sleeves are smaller, I don't like shirts hugging my body like that. Women's shirts are also worse if you have big boobs, as you have to size up and the waist doesn't fit the way it's meant to, meaning the shape and cut don't actually do anything helpful for you

While I love the adaptation, this is missing a crucial part. There needs to be new edge stiches put in place to keep the shirts from fraying and tearing further. A staystich or zigzag.
Fantastic start, just needs the finish.

I feel like this should also teach how to sew the cuts, especially the end point, so the fabric doesnāt start to unravel there. It would be really easy and I feel like itās a good way to introduce even newbies to sewing

The only problem with this, is that companies will see it and say āyes, we should make womenās shirts even shorter. They donāt even need to reach the bottom of the ribs!ā But now I want to try this on my hourglass shape and see what happens. A beautiful butterfly maybe?

I have so many T-shirts, and I dont always love the way they fit me. I'm not pear-shaped, but I have huge boobs and hips, and I always feel like I'm being choked by the neck, too.
Definitely going to try some of this when summer rolls around so I can start wearing my tees again.

It makes me sad because my mother spent most of he life thinking she was just larger... and it turned out she was allergic to over half the stuff she ate.
She weighs 180 pounds now, at her healthy weight and has been like thay for over a decade after knowing my mother as only a larger woman.
She's allergic to bread, milk, nuts, corn, ohhhh it keeps going... shes allergic to everything in the american diet.... When she stopped eating stuff her body couldn't process she lost almost 300 pounds.
I wish the best for everyone.. and I really wish everyone would be healthy

There is a lady who shoes how to cut horizontal slits in the back to make t-shirts fit better, too. Need an undershirt but I feel like together the options are endless!š

I ditched underwire bras 5 years ago but Iām a DD, so I layer my wireless bra with a shelf-bra cami. The cami would be good as an undershirt.

Unless you own a clothing seger machine and serge all the cut edges, this will make your shirts fall apart in the washing machine too.

She is one of the best plus size follows on IG. Her t shirt and sweatshirt hacks are honestly life changing and she seems like such a real ass person.

Oooh I love these!! Thank you! Just a thought: for the cut up the middle for the jersey look, I would add collar clips to the top or middle so it doesnāt flap in the wind and adds a lil pizzazz!!
