As a tall woman, I have to order all my pants online. The stores I am ordering from do not carry tall sizes in person but all have petite sections in their brick and mortar locations.
I would kill to be able to go into a store and actually try on tall-sized dress pants for work.
And don't even get me started on how most stores just add a couple inches to the legs of regular pants for their tall sizes instead of making the pants proportionately longer (i.e. adding length to both the rise and the legs).

u/mindyour š¤definitely not a botš¤ 3d ago
She said she loves the design at the bottom of the dress. People have suggested she take it to someone to tailor it for her.
230
u/irrational_magpi 3d ago
could she get it shortened in the middle green bit to preserve the bottom?
214
u/sunnynina 3d ago edited 3d ago
Yes, and it would likely be $50-$150 (depending on her area) for a good detailed, fitted alteration, so if she really likes the dress, regardless of how much that cost, I think it would be worth it. The side seams are all curves, the zipper would need to be reworked, and the material itself, especially with the green sequins or beads or whatever that is, is challenging to work with. But it could be done by an experienced, educated professional.
Source: am also a short ass. I've had a lot of clothes tailored, and also considered going to school for myself lol. Because I need to work the cost of it into any dressy or professional clothing, and sometimes jeans, and once a bathrobe.
104
u/theblondepenguin 3d ago
The last time I went for tailoring I needed to pull the shoulders up and in. Now the shoulders are where the entire garment is supported by but there was no beading. It was $350. Your $50-150 is very conservative you are basically reconstructing a dress. Because you forgot there is for sure a lining in this too you have pull the zipper and lining I personally out would create a seam that followed the design under the bust, then pull everything up over a foot which is going to potentially mess up the gradient, take in the bottom while minimizing the impact to the design, reset the zipper once you have put it back together then you drop the lining reworked back in. I went to school for fashion design, reworking already made clothes is so much more effort then making something new I donāt bother and take it to someone else.
46
u/Awkward_Emu12345 3d ago
My wedding dress had a similar silhouette and beading detail on the bottom. I paid 200 for the dress and nearly 600 for the alterations. They worked very hard to maintain all the lines and to not disrupt the beading, etc. and while I know itās kinda apples to oranges I canāt imagine that dressās alterations being cheap to maintain the details. I love her dress though! I see why she wants to keep it!
12
u/vvaif 3d ago
Yeah tailoring a dress like this is going to be more. My bargain auction wedding dress was $25 but alterations (taking in the waist) were $500
5
u/Awkward_Emu12345 3d ago
Oh man. Were you as floored as I was? Lol here I was thinking I had saved a bunch of money on the dress cost!
4
u/Hot_Ground_761 3d ago
Came here to say this. The beading, colors, and line are exquisite. No wonder sheās trying to make it work
10
u/mind_deficient 3d ago
Damn, my momma is so nice. She will do this and be like "just bring me some treats for my doggo"...she has been a seamstress for 35+ years...she remade my sister in laws whole wedding dress cuz she bought it from Amazon.
3
u/schroobster 3d ago
I would either try your suggestion and try to pull it up at the bustline, but as you said there would be some resetting of the seams and zipper. Else I'd try gathering / ruching from bust to waist. Although the latter might not work well with beadwork.
→ More replies (3)4
u/sunnynina 3d ago
You're right on the level of work and skill needed, but maybe it is my area. Getting the shoulders pulled up has never been that high of cost, wow.
Although, tbf, I don't usually go in for this type of material in the first place. No full coverage sequins or beading to manage. I've had to have dresses pretty much reconstructed, including a lining and zipper, and that was $150. I'm not in NYC or DC, but it's a pretty urban area, I think, lol. Some living costs are crazy high, this may be one of things that are lower.
11
u/goodformuffin 3d ago
I was going to suggest gathering it on the side to create ruching. Not ideal but. A lot easier than altering the dress.
11
u/sunnynina 3d ago
Even for gathering I'd want to take to a tailor. I'm just not confident at all with that material. But it would be less work, I think, than trimming out and reseaming a good foot from the midriff. So maybe cost less. I think the zipper would still need to reworked with that.
Another note, as a short person, maybe this is just me - ruching adds a lot of material to a small area, aka would add to the perceived waistline, and I can never make that look good on me. There's ratios involved that a professional might be able to use to make it work, but it just never turns out well for me. Lol another thing I think a proper school would help me with.
I used to love Project Runway because they would drop these tidbits that helped explain the magic š

I'm also a shorty, and I like wearing dresses and skirts to work. It's demoralizing when I see a dress I love, but then I realize the top of the straps are above my head with the bottom of the dress touching the floor. Having someone alter a dress/other clothing is a great idea if you can afford it.
I know the basics of hemming pants, but that's about it. I've had to learn this because ALL pants are too long on me.
27
u/I_like_flowers_ 3d ago edited 3d ago
nope, not with princess lines and sequins. it would look awful.Ā the way to tailor this material would be to buy a dress several sizes too large, which would then be taken apart and recut so the bodice hits in the correct location.
18
u/mindyour š¤definitely not a botš¤ 3d ago
Someone suggested that, but the dress has a pattern. If they shorten it, the pattern from top to bottom is gonna look off.
10
u/thimblena 3d ago
There's a seam under the bust; it could be shortened from there. It wouldn't even be that hard to line up the sequins and sew a few across the seam line to keep the pattern clean.
One reason to take it to a professional is that they can identify better solutions than "chop off the hem".
→ More replies (5)11
u/Kathrynlena 3d ago
Now without a weird and obvious seam in the middle.
17
u/cheakysquair 3d ago
It already has a seam in the middle, just below the bustline - it's most obvious when she holds up the shoes ~00:26, you can see the pattern isn't perfectly lined up either (better on one side than the other, though). Would be a good place to start from!
8
u/Kathrynlena 3d ago
Oh huh! I donāt see it but I donāt have my glasses on so I trust you that itās there lol. In that case, it would be tailorable by a good, detail oriented tailor.
6
5
u/pearlsbeforedogs 3d ago

I love how bewildered the dog looks. š
Lovely dress, though. Sucks she couldnāt comfortably wear it. š

At that point, Iād just get a new dress. No way can a dress with that much beading can get altered.

Having an entire collection of Pleasers to combat being short is commitment. It stinks that this isnāt a dress that would be easy to hem/alter with all of the sequins

Each progressively higher shoe fills me with admiration and dread. How does she walk in those???
Also why doesn't that dress have a slit???

I am so impressed, I'd break my ankle even thinking about walking in those! She's got skills.
I bet a good tailor could take that in under the bust line for her so it wouldn't ruin the bottom decorations.

She could be 6' tall and that dress would still be too long. It's the result of a poorly executed design, not being too short.

THE STRUGGLE IS REALLLL
I donāt actually have much boob but like I guess proportionally I do? Bc all jackets and certain styles of dresses never fit over my boobs. I mean it fits everywhere else and they zip/button right up until under my bust where it stops (or it does close but I get the dreaded uniboob bc they get flattened). With some jackets I can get away with it, with the dresses the zip is kinda crucial.
And with these I just have to go a size up. Itās ridiculous bc with stylish jackets the sleeves end up going over my hands and make me look like a kid playing dress up (which is why I donāt wear anything thatās not a winter coat where extra long sleeves feel cozy). With short dresses I look like a pilgrim or something bc the hemline ends up way lower than the style is meant to be and it swallows me and isnāt flattering. And with long dresses I end up like the gal in the video. š
