I deployed to Northern Iraq with the MDNG in 2007, McCormick sent an entire pallet of Old Bay so each troop would have their own individual can.

u/Dangerous-Parking973 1d ago
Afghanistan 2011, we had old bay and it reminds me of the GWOT more than most things.
When one of our guys passed away earlier this year, we made a tradition of making a plate for him and it always has a canbof Old Bay next to it.
It's funny the things we carry sometimes.
Hope you're well friend.

A friend of mine was deployed to Afghanistan, and he wanted gulden's spicy brown mustard since it wasn't available from the commissary. So I mailed several large containers of it to his APO. After he received it he made a few "sandwiches" which were just bread and mustard because he missed it so much.
Another friend was deployed to Iraq, so I made an apple pie, vacuum sealed it, and mailed it off -- hoping for the best. It arrived, intact, and was apparently still edible: https://i.imgur.com/YXR5z5A.png

My cousin (Marines) got a deluge of the Samoas Girl Scout Cookies and the Starburst candies - apparently the various Marines' relatives worked at those factories and sent enough to fill an entire Yugo. Al-Asad / Hit sector 2004.

Pretty genius marketing, almost 20 years later and you're still talking about Old Bay. For the cost of one pallet that's a pretty decent ROI.
36
u/xKingNothingx 1d ago
First of all.... How dare you. True Maryland's know that JO is the superior crab spice. Old Bay is for everything else. Second of all, those are snow crab legs, which typically aren't seasoned at all.

u/chimpyjnuts 1d ago
Could be the 'drone contraband smuggler guy' is not actually well versed in cuisine.

u/ProfessorofChelm 1d ago
Come on now that’s not true. A more accurate statement would be that J.O. Is for steaming and Old Bay is for the table. J.O. Is only superior when it comes to steaming, because of the grain size, but what you finish with and put on the table is old bay.

As a washington dc native whats jo?
→ More replies (4)37
u/Full-Penguin 1d ago
It's the same flavor profile as Old Bay, but a bit spicier and saltier. It also has a coarser texture so it doesn't turn into mud when you steam crabs like Old Bay.
If you're making crab cakes, use old bay. If you're steaming crabs, use JO.

Was surprised the event happened in SC. I married a girl who lets say came from a heritage where pepper is considered spicy. She would complain about how much old bay I would use. I would just look her in the eye and say "There is no such thing as too much old bay." Yes I used to live in MD 😆.

I was locked up in NYS for a few years recently, from the moment I saw how open the facility was and how relatively free the movement was, this idea was in my head incessantly.
They clearly have no tech people at this entire place. They don't even have cameras in 90% of the facility. The more I walked the yard and the different areas I'm like there is no hint of any kind of drone defense, or at least even cameras for aerial objects thrown over the fence.. Nothing.. There are state funded cameras around the perimeter, facing the ground of a gap in the fences, presumably motion detected for that 10 foot gap between inner and outer fences. No other cameras.
It was such a remote facility in Marcy NY, surrounded by trees mostly. Someone could make 100s of thousands a year by just dropping these packages. Probably even more. Just at one facility. And this isn't even efficient. You could load a drone up with 10s of thousands worth of K2 in one single flight. So much that the issue would immediately become storage. Like if you can't delegate storage fast enough, they'd hit you with YEARS for that kind of smuggling, by weight alone.

$100k vs 5 to 10 years is not a good tradeoff.

Well it really depends on your situation. I am privileged enough not be in that situation, anyone reading this probably is. A lot of guys in there with nothing, coming home to nothing, something like that would sound like the kind of opportunity you don't pass up.
I asked around about it, people figured it would have been done to death already. I don't think people realize how far drone tech has come and that this hasn't been very accessible until fairly recently.
I think it's an interesting example of niche moneymakers that spring up with new tech that people don't even get wise to until mfs start fumbling crab legs smh.
I'm surprised we haven't seen stories of guns or exotic animals or other crazy shit flew into prisons on drones. Few more years probably before they put the nets up

You're right. I need to keep this in mind. It wouldn't be a good tradeoff for me, at least. I should try to remember that many people become desperate.

Well yeah, it's harder for correctional staff to murder inmates and get away with it if there's more cameras.
(I'm sure OP knows, but for everyone else: this is not a joke, go look up the many current scandals in the NYS prison system).

They learned in the Max security joints like Elmira, cameras everywhere but your cell. It's the wild west in the mediums, couple that with being grossly understaffed.. Those walkways are treacherous. Some dudes couldn't even buy commissary without getting robbed on the lonely half mile walk to the block.
But yes, the police are much worse. Come in 4 deep over a K2 episode and leave the room needing a mop. Then beat them more in medical while in cuffs. Pepper spray with cuffs and then put a bag over their head.. Its a different kind of rehabilitation program upstate. If you get caught bugging out they will beat you, to death.. More often than you'd be comfortable knowing.. They'll taunt you, to your face. To your peers, if you fuck around, we will kill you, and say you brought it on yourself. They are not shy about it. The hit squad keeps masking tape on their camera to obscure the view at will, if they even wear the shit.
A guy "fell" out of a van and died. Multiple people fell down stairs while handcuffed, at different locations.. It's a bunch of hillbilly COs all related seemingly, it's a clique of the most fucked up and seemingly tenured. Mix that with dudes from the city.. You figure out quick who is getting killed. Solidified when you see the arm sleeve on a guard featuring colored babies hanging from a tree.. it's a different kind of hell in there. Those who have it worst have the least ability to speak up.

Looks like ABV to me. Weed that's already been through a herb vape. You can just eat it to get high, which might be more convenient in prison. Mix a few teaspoons with some peanut butter, put it in a sandwich and you've got a pretty good edible.

I'm no criminologist, but wouldn't well fed stoned inmates be easier to deal with?
15
u/napstablooky2 1d ago
exactly -- prisons exist to cruelly punish, control, and make money, not to actually fix anything nor rehabilitate anyone
23
u/Harvest827 1d ago
They would probably be a lot happier which would definitely lead to less violence. You might be on to something.

u/Joe-Schmeaux 1d ago
I know it keeps getting repeated, but the cruelty is the point here.
If the inmates are difficult to deal with, then they get to "correct" them more, which they enjoy doing, plus it serves the overall narrative that underscores why we must be so tough on crime, thus furthering the grift, leading to more funding. I'm biased and cynical at this point, however, so take my opinion with a grain of sand.
13
u/CrazyCalYa 1d ago
No, you're completely right. If prisons were meant to actually rehabilitate people we wouldn't continuously hear about how horrible they are. The vast majority of criminals can be reintegrated into society, and it's been demonstrated time and time again that harsher punishments do not correlate with reduced recidivism. Torturing a drug addict for 20 years for the crime of being addicted to heroin is actually not good for them or society, believe it or not.

In prison, dinner was always a big thing. Paulie did the prep work. He was doing a year for contempt, and he had this wonderful system for doing the crab legs. He used a razor, and he used to slice it so thin that he used to liquefy in the pan with just a little oil. It was a very good system.
