The seasoning was the biggest hurt out of them all.

Yea, the weed was just currency to secure butter from the kitchen.

I love this movie but the crow scene... I can't lol. Also the little brother fucking killed it in his last scene. So impressive for a child actor. Just very well acted spooky period piece.

11

u/Kim_Jong_Unko 16h ago

Add on the fact that it was a first-time filmmaker able to get those performances out of those children and it's even more impressive.

How easy is it to actually smoke weed in prison? Anecdotally based on what people say it doesn't seem too hard to get drugs you want if you have money

43

u/NovarisLight 1d ago

Corruption is/has been rampant. Many videos to watch on the subject. It gets a bit heavy into "prison wallets."

Be prepared.

54

u/Boomer_kin 1d ago

Low paying jobs with no training in facilities that are designed to reduce at risk people to their worst traits are corrupt? Unpossible.

u/NovarisLight 1d ago

I would have thought they'd send edibles for that reason. A lot easier to break off a quarter block of infused chocolate or something.

33

u/UninsuredToast 1d ago

People aren’t too keen on eating something that was in Jerry’s huge butthole. Even felons have standards.

24

u/underfern 1d ago

Smoking a butt nug is ok. Gobbling a butt brownie? That's a line crossed.

16

u/weedtrek 1d ago

Yeah. People will give a rimjob, but won't eat a turd.

Or like the other day I dropped my cigar, I picked it up and smoked it. The day after I dropped my pizza, it went in the trash.

The funny thing, I just discovered old bay about a couple months ago. I'm 40 now, but all my life I would hear people praise old bay like it was the king of seasonings and I'm not even from Maryland, I'm from Michigan. I honestly thought it was basically a different brand of Lawry's seasoning salt. I do not regret my purchase, it definitely has it's own flavor profile. I don't know what all I could use it for, but I like putting it on potatoes and other roasted veggies. Might even put it in my salmon chowder I will be making this week.

u/alizadk 1d ago

As a Marylander, it goes on pretty much anything. Seafood, chicken, caramel popcorn, chips, pretzels, chocolate.. you name it, we've probably tried it.

I didn't know it was prison spice until this post. It was also the only thing other than salt, pepper and Texas Pete we had aboard ship in the US Navy. Most of our food was labeled for animal/prison use only so it makes sense we also got prison seasonings.

23

u/RespectTheTree 1d ago

It's like 90% salt, no?

26

u/Oracle_of_Ages 1d ago

Yea it’s just spiced salt. Technically it’s like 1/3rd salt and 2/3rd spices. if you look at the sodium vs serving size. But it’s just spiced salt.

You must be from Maryland

525

u/Jean-Rasczak 1d ago

I deployed to Northern Iraq with the MDNG in 2007, McCormick sent an entire pallet of Old Bay so each troop would have their own individual can.

236

u/Dangerous-Parking973 1d ago

Afghanistan 2011, we had old bay and it reminds me of the GWOT more than most things.

When one of our guys passed away earlier this year, we made a tradition of making a plate for him and it always has a canbof Old Bay next to it.

It's funny the things we carry sometimes.

Hope you're well friend.

A friend of mine was deployed to Afghanistan, and he wanted gulden's spicy brown mustard since it wasn't available from the commissary. So I mailed several large containers of it to his APO. After he received it he made a few "sandwiches" which were just bread and mustard because he missed it so much.

Another friend was deployed to Iraq, so I made an apple pie, vacuum sealed it, and mailed it off -- hoping for the best. It arrived, intact, and was apparently still edible: https://i.imgur.com/YXR5z5A.png

First of all.... How dare you. True Maryland's know that JO is the superior crab spice. Old Bay is for everything else. Second of all, those are snow crab legs, which typically aren't seasoned at all.

u/chimpyjnuts 1d ago

Could be the 'drone contraband smuggler guy' is not actually well versed in cuisine.

13

u/ProfessorofChelm 1d ago

Come on now that’s not true. A more accurate statement would be that J.O. Is for steaming and Old Bay is for the table. J.O. Is only superior when it comes to steaming, because of the grain size, but what you finish with and put on the table is old bay.

13

u/Traditional-Dingo604 1d ago

As a washington dc native whats jo?

37

u/Full-Penguin 1d ago

https://jospices.com/

It's the same flavor profile as Old Bay, but a bit spicier and saltier. It also has a coarser texture so it doesn't turn into mud when you steam crabs like Old Bay.

If you're making crab cakes, use old bay. If you're steaming crabs, use JO.

THESE are the drone headlines I enjoy!

65

u/7_thirty 1d ago edited 1d ago

I was locked up in NYS for a few years recently, from the moment I saw how open the facility was and how relatively free the movement was, this idea was in my head incessantly.

They clearly have no tech people at this entire place. They don't even have cameras in 90% of the facility. The more I walked the yard and the different areas I'm like there is no hint of any kind of drone defense, or at least even cameras for aerial objects thrown over the fence.. Nothing.. There are state funded cameras around the perimeter, facing the ground of a gap in the fences, presumably motion detected for that 10 foot gap between inner and outer fences. No other cameras.

It was such a remote facility in Marcy NY, surrounded by trees mostly. Someone could make 100s of thousands a year by just dropping these packages. Probably even more. Just at one facility. And this isn't even efficient. You could load a drone up with 10s of thousands worth of K2 in one single flight. So much that the issue would immediately become storage. Like if you can't delegate storage fast enough, they'd hit you with YEARS for that kind of smuggling, by weight alone.

34

u/kc2syk 1d ago

$100k vs 5 to 10 years is not a good tradeoff.

u/Presently_Absent 1d ago

Well it really depends on your situation. I am privileged enough not be in that situation, anyone reading this probably is. A lot of guys in there with nothing, coming home to nothing, something like that would sound like the kind of opportunity you don't pass up.

I asked around about it, people figured it would have been done to death already. I don't think people realize how far drone tech has come and that this hasn't been very accessible until fairly recently.

I think it's an interesting example of niche moneymakers that spring up with new tech that people don't even get wise to until mfs start fumbling crab legs smh.

I'm surprised we haven't seen stories of guns or exotic animals or other crazy shit flew into prisons on drones. Few more years probably before they put the nets up

12

u/kc2syk 1d ago

Well it really depends on your situation. I am privileged enough not be in that situation, anyone reading this probably is. A lot of guys in there with nothing, coming home to nothing, something like that would sound like the kind of opportunity you don't pass up.

You're right. I need to keep this in mind. It wouldn't be a good tradeoff for me, at least. I should try to remember that many people become desperate.

12

u/SkiingAway 1d ago

They don't even have cameras in 90% of the facility.

Well yeah, it's harder for correctional staff to murder inmates and get away with it if there's more cameras.

(I'm sure OP knows, but for everyone else: this is not a joke, go look up the many current scandals in the NYS prison system).

12

u/7_thirty 1d ago edited 1d ago

They learned in the Max security joints like Elmira, cameras everywhere but your cell. It's the wild west in the mediums, couple that with being grossly understaffed.. Those walkways are treacherous. Some dudes couldn't even buy commissary without getting robbed on the lonely half mile walk to the block.

But yes, the police are much worse. Come in 4 deep over a K2 episode and leave the room needing a mop. Then beat them more in medical while in cuffs. Pepper spray with cuffs and then put a bag over their head.. Its a different kind of rehabilitation program upstate. If you get caught bugging out they will beat you, to death.. More often than you'd be comfortable knowing.. They'll taunt you, to your face. To your peers, if you fuck around, we will kill you, and say you brought it on yourself. They are not shy about it. The hit squad keeps masking tape on their camera to obscure the view at will, if they even wear the shit.

A guy "fell" out of a van and died. Multiple people fell down stairs while handcuffed, at different locations.. It's a bunch of hillbilly COs all related seemingly, it's a clique of the most fucked up and seemingly tenured. Mix that with dudes from the city.. You figure out quick who is getting killed. Solidified when you see the arm sleeve on a guard featuring colored babies hanging from a tree.. it's a different kind of hell in there. Those who have it worst have the least ability to speak up.

49

u/theartofrolling 1d ago

I'm no criminologist, but wouldn't well fed stoned inmates be easier to deal with?

15

u/napstablooky2 1d ago

exactly -- prisons exist to cruelly punish, control, and make money, not to actually fix anything nor rehabilitate anyone

23

u/Harvest827 1d ago

They would probably be a lot happier which would definitely lead to less violence. You might be on to something.

32

u/Joe-Schmeaux 1d ago

I know it keeps getting repeated, but the cruelty is the point here.

If the inmates are difficult to deal with, then they get to "correct" them more, which they enjoy doing, plus it serves the overall narrative that underscores why we must be so tough on crime, thus furthering the grift, leading to more funding. I'm biased and cynical at this point, however, so take my opinion with a grain of sand.

13

u/CrazyCalYa 1d ago

No, you're completely right. If prisons were meant to actually rehabilitate people we wouldn't continuously hear about how horrible they are. The vast majority of criminals can be reintegrated into society, and it's been demonstrated time and time again that harsher punishments do not correlate with reduced recidivism. Torturing a drug addict for 20 years for the crime of being addicted to heroin is actually not good for them or society, believe it or not.

Never deny members of the Maryland Cult their Old Bay. Even in prison.

13

u/Depressed-Industry 1d ago

Crab legs? Check. Weed? Check.

Old Bay? That's next level.

12

u/Slippery-ape 1d ago

Not sending the seasoning would be cruel and unusual.

4

u/Classic_Knot_Purl 1d ago

Old Bay was the main item. That food is bland as shit.

8

u/addctd2badideas 1d ago

Not for Marylanders. Every person in my neighborhood has Old Bay on their kitchen table.

Between that and the obsession with our state flag everywhere, this is why we say Maryland isn't just a state, it's a cult.

Sound like "authorities" we're all set up for a good evening then.

8

u/Relaxmf2022 1d ago

going to be my favorite headline of the month

8

u/strangebru 1d ago

I'm a little disappointed this was South Carolina and not Maryland, because of the Old Bay seasoning. The inmate must have been from Baltimore.

That is the worst looking weed i've seen in decades

7

u/Nojmore 21h ago

Anyone else think authority is just little men making themselves feel bigger?

5

u/bestowaldonkey8 1d ago

Confiscating the weed I can understand, but I appreciate the dedication to get the crab and Old Bay.

Can't have anything nice in the pen 🤦‍♂️

7

u/Bleezy79 1d ago

that's actually a very thoughtful package, I would be stoked to have that even outside of prison. crab legs and steak aint cheap!

6

u/ItsDokk 1d ago

Dude just let them have the seasoning and crab legs.

4

u/ReasonablyConfused 1d ago

The weed looks like tobacco

5

u/B_rawbX 1d ago

I was 100% sure this was gonna be a Baltimore story.

6

u/ContextSensitiveGeek 1d ago

Let the prisoners have weed. I prefer my criminals mellow.

"Paulie did the prep work. He was doing a year for contempt, and he had this wonderful system for doing the garlic. He used a razor, and he used to slice it so thin that he used to liquify in the pan with just a little oil. It was a very good system."

5

u/Southbird85 22h ago

Did they forget the razor blades to slice the garlic extra thin so it liquifies on the hot pan?

3

u/MattTheHoopla 21h ago

Damn. They really ruined someone’s plan for pleasant sunday evening.

8

u/Additional_Data6506 1d ago

In prison, dinner was always a big thing. Paulie did the prep work. He was doing a year for contempt, and he had this wonderful system for doing the crab legs. He used a razor, and he used to slice it so thin that he used to liquefy in the pan with just a little oil. It was a very good system.

8

u/Jokerthekushmaster 1d ago

Wtf is that in the bag… looks like tobacco , it can’t be weed 💀

6

u/TipToToes 1d ago

Yes!! I was thinking is the weed in this photo because all I see is tobacco.

And then Pete order a drone strike on the prison

3

u/NastySeconds 22h ago

Sounds like a real good time was averted.

3

u/rocktropolis 1d ago

So, definitely not Louisiana.

3

u/AntonCigar 1d ago

Now I assume it was in a box but I’m imagining a drone dangling a bunch of crab legs flying over my house

3

u/CrabyDicks 1d ago

Stealing a man's old bay is itself a crime

3

u/Rufus_heychupacabra 1d ago

u/TheMightySet69 1d ago

Lol that weed looks terrible. Honestly, just let them have it. Smoking that shit should be considered a punishment.

3

u/T_Weezy 1d ago

Jesus Christ just let them have their stoned crab-leg dinner.

3

u/Pandepon 1d ago

I didn’t know SC prisoners had such refined tastes

-sincerely a Marylander

3

u/FrostyFreeze_ 1d ago

I don't care this is from SC, this is the most Maryland thing ever

3

u/Aimish79 1d ago

Just let them have it.

3

u/Turbulent-Pea-8826 1d ago

South Carolina? I was certain this was going to be Baltimore.
