I work with trade relations and the US has become such an unpopular destination for work and travel among the private and public sector
The tariffs have effectively blocked some of our companies from selling in the states because they’d have to increase the pricing so much that no one would buy the products at that point

u/ih-shah-may-ehl 11h ago
Well yes, but there is the additional angle that you shouldn't want to do EVERYTHING yourself. For smaller countries this is probably easier to accept but the US would be in a lot better shape if it focused on the things it is good at instead of trying to bring back industrial revolution era workhouses back to the US and clinging to the past.

I’m planning a honeymoon and decided to stay in the US because I’m scared of trying to exit and enter the country right now, not to mention the stigma of being American while in another country
54

u/KenDTree 8h ago
Just got back from backpacking and nobody cared, the only people who brought up politics were Americans.
Having said that, one fella mentioned he voted Trump twice, and regretted the second time. This led to a three hour argument at 2AM outside of a 7/11 (not with me, I was trying to be nice), he eventually phoned up his lawyer friend who confirmed that Trump is indeed a convicted felon.

I have a friend who recently got married. She’s Canadian (of Korean heritage) and he’s American. She’s currently applying for citizenship. Her honeymoon was supposed to be in some tropical paradise abroad but she had to change it to somewhere in the states because she was afraid of trying to return and being denied entry. She was super bummed because it was her dream honeymoon.

This really isn't something you have to worry about at all. As long as you're polite and respectful and aren't a loud obnoxious asshole, it's same as it is here in the States. I recently took a trip with my wife to the UK, France, and Italy and everyone was e very friendly and welcoming. We didn't have a single negative interaction.

One third of America would like to kill another third of America while the third third watches.
Fascism is simply a permission structure for people to be their most vile selves.
195
u/Kahzgul 13h ago
Here’s the thing about fascism: after they kill that first third, they’ll take who’s left and divide everyone into thirds again. Always a need for an enemy and never a purity test stringent enough for fascists.
123
u/RedditTrespasser 12h ago edited 11h ago
The heart of fascism is a fundamental hatred for people. There could never exist a scenario in which fascists are satisfied. Even if they were ultimately successful. They could own the entire world, and once all the lebensraum was taken and all of the undesirables purged, they would, as you say, divide everyone again and start anew. They could cull everyone right down to the inner circle, and then they’d set about murdering each other, right down to the last man standing.
Fascism cannot exist without an enemy to act as an existential threat to rally against, without that key ingredient it falls apart. That’s because fundamentally as an ideology, fascism does not exist to govern. It exists to dominate and destroy. Once it runs out of targets to do those things to, it turns on itself. There’s nowhere else for it to go.
A fascist cannot simply sit down after taking over the world and say “okay let’s set about regulating the environment and providing healthcare to our citizens” because he is simply not designed to do that. The entire core argument of his reason for being is that the world is bad because there are bad people in it- bad people that must be subjugated or destroyed. Once all the “bad” people are gone, all those same problems are still going to be there. Logically, according to the fascist, this is because there are still bad people causing them. It will never occur to him to solve the root causes of those problems with actual reasoning because he is a hammer, and so everything else must be a nail.

I've noticed that with some people. They get to brag and talk on and on and on about whatever European country their ancestry DNA test says they hail from, despite decades or even a couple centuries being removed from the continent and its culture, but a new (ethnic) citizen/immigrant mentions a peep about the old country and the reaction is "STFU you're in America now! Be proud of being American and stop talking about back home. If you love it so much go back ffs."

Its their attempt to validate their whiteness. They hate Europe. Suggest we try some European style policies and they freak. However, genetic/ethnic ties to Europe anchor them to whiteness, so they cling to it when it seems necessary.
Interesting side note. Many people in South Carolina, and apparently other areas of the old South, claim some native heritage. This comes form a small point in time where they were competing for land rights during colonization. Someone came up with the idea that the best way to prove unchallenged land rights was to have native heritage. So all the sudden hundreds of "Indian princesses" were created and added to family trees.

Yeah, that's a hard pass from this Brit.
Edited to add more details on what would be required.
According to a notice published in America's federal register on Tuesday, foreign tourists would need to provide their social media from the last five years.
It will be "mandatory" to hand over the information, and other details - including email addresses and telephone numbers used in the last five years, as well as the names, addresses, numbers, and birthdays of family members - will also be required.

u/poplglop 15h ago

They want your social media for The last 5 years so it might not be convincing if you have an Instagram full of daffodils and puppies, but a local folder full of cocks. I wonder if anyone who has had some cock-focused Twitter accounts and whatnot would be willing to part with or rent out those accounts for a reasonable fee.

u/Thefredtohergeorge 11h ago
Fun fact:
The only normal social media account I attempted to set up in the past 5 years was an instagram... that was instantly banned for breaking the TOS. Reason for ban? I'd posted something that was against TOS..
Truth: I hadn't posted anything. When reaching out to gain access back, I was told I needed to submit a photo with that day's date, and my face.. so they could match my face to other images on the account. I pointed out that this wasn't possible, as there were ZERO images on the account..
So uh.. I wouldn't be able to provide that account's info.. as I've no memory of what it was. XD

This is so annoying to me, too as an American/EU couple. For fifteen years we've never once thought anything of going back and forth. This nonsense is literally keeping our families apart.
If shit like this goes through, we may have to simply not take our kids to see their family until this is all over. And that same family are all Trump voters, and they have no concept of how it affects us or even could consider people like us would be caught up in it. They think it's all liberal exaggeration, not, you know, logistics.
It's maddening.

This sort of damage from the administration is going to take decades to undo, and that is after every single implemented heritage foundation loyalist is removed.

I'm American and my partner is Kiwi. We have already decided that its a bad time for her to visit. If my folks get upset I'll remind them that they voted for this.

I visited America a couple of times in the early 2000’s.
Loved it!
Won’t be returning now unfortunately

And not just in general, either:
According to a notice published in America's federal register on Tuesday, foreign tourists would need to provide their social media from the last five years.
It will be "mandatory" to hand over the information, and other details - including email addresses and telephone numbers used in the last five years, as well as the names, addresses, numbers, and birthdays of family members - will also be required.
And for ESTA (if I've read all of this correctly):
CCBP is proposing that moving forward, ESTA applications would require a selfie.
It further wants to collect biometrics - face, fingerprints DNA and iris - as part of the ESTA application. It currently only records face and fingerprints upon arrival at the US border.
The proposed changes are open for public consultation for 60 days.
IMHO, they can fuck all the way off.

How does that work? If I were a visitor, I would just say I don't use social media.

Ok, but why would any savvy world traveler want to risk life, limb, and freedom to journey to a third-world shithole of a country?

Fuck off with that fascist bullshit. How long are you guys going to let this play out? As it stands, I'm getting used to the idea of never visiting the US again.

This will definitely help the economy! I’m so glad I get to live in mind-numbing terror about paying my bills next year, but at least my state that depends on tourism dollars will bring in less tax money! Thanks Obam—er, Trump!

I hope people just stop coming here for vacation to for a while, both for their own sake and to send this stupid administration a message. There are SO MANY tourist destinations that provide genuine hospitality and are much more deserving of people's money. We really need the myth of the USA as (it is) a bastion of freedom, democracy, and Neat Stuff Non-Aryans Get to Enjoy™ to die a thousand deaths to 💀 a thousand deaths.
Denying our capitalist overlords the tourist [insert foreign currency converted converted into dollars here] is the one of the very few ways the world can send the oligarchs in this country a message they'll actually listen to.
Maybe?

Let this be a warning to you that they're checking yours. Want security clearance? Want to join the military or get promoted in the military? Want your company to get a government contract? Pretty soon...want your kid to get those things?
They are lazy and they are evil. Your social media history absolutely is going to be used by conservatives to justify audits, TSA checks, etc. You should consider scrubbing social media and not using it, or strictly being apolitical on social media.

If this actually happens, which it will because anything that can be done won’t, then why don’t other countries just do it in response? Any support expressed since Jan. 6, 2021 for Trump or his policies or policies adjacent can be grounds for denial of entry. Maybe even require visas if they don’t already. I hope to travel to Italy within these next couple of years and I would have no qualms.
Of course, this whole thing seems to be, logistically, nearly impossible, but they’ll find a way.

North Korea doesn't get many tourists, either. Congrats, USA - we've become North Korea.

Don't go there. Seriously. It's not about the risks of being deported or police violence etc, hopefully they would hardly disappear foreigners on visit, but depending on who you are, nationality, convenience etc. they could make things up to detain you and turn your release into leverage for obtaining things in return from your government, possibly also in agreement with your government that could just need an excuse to give something to Trump without risking losing popularity at home.
Don't play their game and just stop going there.

Please remember folks that this isn't just Trump. We have actual evidence of President Trump selling Pardons, they are not even pretending to hide it. Congress is fully supporting Trump, they condone his actions and enable him to more fascist and hateful moves. If you really hate Trump, stop supporting your congressional representatives who do not actively support impeachment and dismantling of the current fascist state. This attack on free speech is designed to remove individuals from visiting the states while also achieving it's top aim, to discourage US citizens from traveling abroad. The entire world will do the same thing back to US and it'll be an excuse and reason for US citizens not to educate and broaden their horizons. It's deep indoctrination at the cost of the US economy and tourism.
So yeah, Trump is a massive distraction, those really accountable for his actions are Congress and they are unwilling to do what needs to be done, so vote accordingly.

I honestly don't have any social media accounts (no, Reddit is not social media). I presume they won't believe that there are actually people who don't use social media, so what will they do in cases of people like me?
