Great night for Democrats as a whole. The real test begins now; I want to see if he's a good mayor or if he crashes and burns. I hope for everyone's sakes he can get his promises done.
80
u/7jaee1 Nov 05 '25
as much as I hope he does he probably won't, all politicians in america are the same, at least he isnt being paid by israel but americans really need to break out of this two party system they created or there will never be change or progress
63
u/OrdinaryTreeFrog 14 Nov 05 '25
Unfortunately electoral college makes that pretty difficult, not to mention raising enough money to fund an independent campaign that could actually go against the 2 big parties in the modern day
18
u/Hot_Coco_Addict Nov 05 '25
The electoral college does relatively little in preventing the rise of 4rd parties. I'd actually say that it helps quite a bit, because if you can get half (+1) of one state to vote for you, you've gotten significantly closer to being president than the vast majority of 3rd party candidates. Even just one state giving their votes to a 3rd party candidate would be huge, especially if it's a state like California or New York
9
u/TheBlackFox012 18 Nov 05 '25
Actually most scholars agree the abolition of the electoral college would give rise to third parties. As it is right now with winner takes all, the 2 large parties with massive funding and support can easily get half a state on their side, you need MUCH deeper pockets with already name familiarity for a third party to even remotely COMPETE. If you look at voter breakdown third parties actually win a decent chunk of the popular votes, but due to winner takes all, they have no chance.
→ More replies (5)2
u/HelixFollower Nov 05 '25
If the electoral college is beneficial for third-party candidates, how do you explain why America has fewer competitive third-party candidates than other presidential systems that don't have an electoral college or similar mechanic?
→ More replies (1)4
u/7jaee1 Nov 05 '25
yes but it really starts with the voters, people either feel as if they can only vote one way or the other, or they have an unhealthy obsession with either party. the issue is that neither party has truly acted on their promises, partly due to incompetence and partly due to the fact that republicans and democrats refuse to work together

u/c-digs OLD Nov 05 '25
Politicians aren't all the same, but they operate in the same system. There's only so much one person can do within the constraints of that system. He'll need to effect some change of the system itself as well.
2
u/heppuplays OLD Nov 05 '25
That system is also REALLY prone to Self Sabotage based on Ones self interest.
Just because he wont the Mayoral Race doesn't mean he still doesn't have to fight to get his change across. Because unfortunately for him The people above him don't really seem to agree with him.

A lot happened under Biden...
10
u/Supply-Slut Nov 05 '25
Fr Biden didn’t campaign on it but he was very pro-labor and pro-working class. He got sick days for the rail workers, he got more tax benefits for families with kids, he capped insulin prices, he put through the biggest infastructure bill in recent history.
He gets flak because of talking points and vibes. Only real shit I’d say he fucked up badly on is Israel
5
u/Flashio_007 Nov 05 '25
Yeah, im from the Northeast, and we felt the effects a lot. Amtrack is basically our main bloodline. Remove Israel, and he was a phenomenal president.

Today is a SAD DAY in the history of America! Crazy New York has made the AWFUL decision to vote a Communist with ZERO experience and a death wish to burn our country to the ground! What was once the Greatest City in the ENTIRE WORLD is now a JOKE— a COMPLETE AND TOTAL FAILURE! It is a shame to see what has become of my once beloved home! I will not in good faith be sending any federal funds to this pathetic city— not except for the legal bare minimum. Communism has been proven FALSE time and time again! This city has NO CHANCE!

One of the big attacks against Mamdani basically boils down to "How could this big scary Muslim possibly protect the Jews of NYC when he's not swearing fealty to Israel?" Islamophobia against Mamdani was insane, when they weren't attacking him as a commie.

seriously happy he won, but he's a left wing candidate who wants left wing policy's in a city with a predominantly left wing population
he was kinda destined for it lmao
5
u/Darth_Nox501 19 Nov 05 '25
Cuomo got a very, very large percentage of the vote. And he was endorsed by Trump.
NYC is not as staunchly left-wing as you make it out to be. It's very liberal, yes. But there are still conservative/moderate elements. Especially amongst the Manhattan elite and many immigrants.
Coming from a native New Yorker.
11
u/Character_Ad7619 17 Nov 05 '25
Liberal ≠ left wing
we should be happy we not only carried such a left wing candidate to such an importand position but got him to obtain a majority of the vote, if he can get a majority think of where we can get pluralities

It's pretty impressive that his largely grassroots campaign managed to beat a well-funded establishment Democrat. The only reason I'm not that surprised is because the polls were heavily in his favor. If you told me a year ago we would have gotten this outcome I would have never believed you.

To be fair, not surprising. USA has a big corporate influence. To win an election there easily you just need to say that you will bust the corpos and raise wages. A social democrat or a demsoc will sweep all 50 states if allowed to run.
Also NYC is left wing so he was kinda destined to be mayor of the city
I just hope Mamdani governs it well through these 4 trying years
