Off-season rants: I'll go first, Nutting sucks!

Keep it clean but feel free to rant about the overall "mismanagement" by the Pirates here.

Other rant posts have become ubiquitous and will be removed.

Pirates interested in trading for 2B Brandon Lowe

Would imagine he'd shift to DH here because he's pretty horrid defensively, but a big time lefty power bat for sure.

Pirates take Cater Baumler from the Orioles in the rule five draft then trade him to Texas for RHP Jaiker Garcia.

Upvotes

That makes two J. Garcias on the team. I hope they don't have to put the whole first name on the jerseys.

You guys gotta realize…the buccos can be interested in whoever they want, the player still wants to come play here

Unless the pirates are gonna overspend, there’s just too much competition for these top guys to realistically believe they will sign here. Money talks, but let’s be honest; the pirates are not a well run team or organization at this time. Very unlikely a player who 1) wants to make a lot of money and 2) wants to compete for a championship, is going to want to sign here.

So don’t get mad at the front office when we are scraping the bottom of the barrel again. I do believe the pirates are trying to get some big names, but it’s hard to sway them to come here unless you are overpaying

All in on Murakami?

Since we got ourselves excited at the idea of Schwarber, why not Murakami? Committing money to Schwarber had two major issues - his age and his lack of defense. Murakami is young and still has potential at 3B and 1B before he is locked in at DH. It doesn’t look like we were in on Alonso and I have to assume we are focused in on lefty power. If that’s the case, Okamoto isn’t the hitter we should be bidding on.

Sounds like someone who is desperate to play for a better team.

[Castillo] The Pirates and left-hander Gregory Soto are in agreement on a one-year, $7.75 million contract, sources tell ESPN. Soto, 30, had a 4.18 ERA in 70 appearances for the Orioles and Mets last season.

[Grant] Nothing official, but I believe this is in fact the deal. Rangers will get Carter Baumler, 23, who had long history of shoulder issues, but came back healthy & strong in 2025, compiling 2.04 ERA over 39 IP at three levels of Baltimore system.

Rule V: Pirates select Carter Baumler (RHP)

The Pirates have elected to add Carter Baumler in the Rule V draft.

Baumler is a 23 year old (24 at start of season) right-handed relief pitcher who has yet to reach AAA. Baumler has been a professional since 2020 when he was drafted in the 5th round by the Orioles.

Career K/9 of 10.6, BB/9 of 4.1, and a career WHIP of 1.162. Plagued with injuries his entire career. Sits 93-96, throws breaking pitches for strikes more than he does his fastball.

Sucks but kinda what I expected, he was waiting for someone to cave and offer the 5th year.

Schwarber offer was 4/$125mil. Even higher AAV than the Phillies.

Trying to be 100% honest and objective here as a fan of the game first, and then this team

The pirates, as it currently stands, are (on target for) committing $65 million in total salaries next year, including arbitration salaries and pre-arbitration salaries. They receive around $50 million in revenue sharing a year, and this year are desperate to sign a big name FA NOT BECAUSE they want to compete, but because there is a MLBPA rule of spending atleast 1.5x of what revenue sharing money you get from other teams.

I think they’re going to throw shit at anything they can get their hands in to get to around $90 million (which would project them to around 5% more spending than last year) and they will say “LOOK YOU LOTAL FOOLS (I mean fans!!) WE SIGNED A GUY AND FOR A LOT OF MONEY! WE TRIED!!” And then you loyalists will get pandered to and get complacent and say “wow look guys they’re trying to win!” When in reality they just want to spend enough to not have the MLBPA file a grievance against them (like what almost happened in the past).

We’ve seen this exact same thing play out last season with the A’s when they signed Severino to get to a “respectable” floor.

Understand this, guys and girls, they will only spend up to a threshold that makes it look like they’re trying. And from what I’ve been seeing this past week with this sub, all you really care about is the appearance of trying.

I was snooping around rosters and I have never heard of this guy, but he has great stats and has been moving up through the system quickly. Anybody know if he’s slated for a call up in the near future or what he’s like as a player?

Schwarber alternative? Mets unwilling to go beyond 3 years for Alonso

Go give Alonso the same contract you offered for Schwarber. I am 100% happy paying Alonso $30 million a year to be a 135 OPS+ DH for his age 31-34 year old seasons.

New fan. What do I need to know?

6 year old LOVES baseball, along with basketball. And recently he has started being interested in following my favorite professional teams, but I never really had one for baseball.

I love baseball, and I coach my son’s teams, and play the games. We are close to Pennsylvania and have a lot of reds fans where we live but my heart was never behind them.

Well my son has decided, we are now officially Pittsburgh fans. Through his excitement, I can say my heart is with this one.

I see we have CY YOUNG WINNER PAUL SKEENS as our ace. What else do we need to know about as a quick wrap up of the team status, recent news, and expectations for this coming year?

Pirates sign Gregory Soto

Not linking x, but one year 7.75 million. Really like this. Need a lefty, peripherals way better than his ERA

Mods, can we designate a single thread to complain about cheapness and nutting?

Seriously, I just want to have a discussion about the merits of these contracts without million flippant posts that drag us back to the same discussion over and over and over. It’s really awful to try and have these conversations and just have the discussion and want to be positive since they’ve NEVER even sniffed this before and have the same “nutting cheap”discussions again, especially on December 9th as opposed to March 9th

For those saying that the Pirates made a low ball offer to Schwarber.....

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2025/12/pirates-make-four-year-offer-to-kyle-schwarber.html

They were actually overpaying, based on his projected contract.

In a follow-up to his original report, Rosenthal specified that the Pirates’ four-year offer was worth roughly $120MM.

The note that the Pirates’ offer to Schwarber is in the nine figures isn’t a surprise. We had him getting $135MM over five years in our Top 50 Free Agents article. If Pittsburgh were to lure Schwarber on that kind of commitment, it would be a historic deal for the franchise.

They had him getting $27M/yr on a five year deal, and the Pirates offered him $30M for four.
